SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Trevor Tinker, Chance Lamer and Daschle Lamer all went undefeated in their matches, but Cal Poly wrestling fell to Northern Illinois and No. 15 Little Rock in its final two home duals of the season Friday night at Mott Athletics Center.
Prior to the duals, the Mustangs honored their seven seniors — Josh Harkey, Abe Hinrichsen, Cole Jackson, Kendall La Rosa, Jarad Priest, Trevor Tinker and Wesley Wilson.
Cal Poly opened the dual doubleheader by dropping a tight battle with Northern Illinois 25-19. The Huskies won the first three matches to jump out to a 12-0 lead before Chance stepped on the mat at 149 pounds and throttled his opponent. The redshirt junior and two-time NCAA Round of 12 qualifier used six takedowns — including five in the second period — to roll to a 19-4 technical fall at 4:24.
Two bouts later, redshirt junior Luka Wick, ranked No. 25 in the country at 165 pounds, earned over three minutes of riding time en route to a shutout victory by a 7-0 decision.
After a pin by the Huskies (6-3) at 174, Daschle grabbed a pin of his own at 184 pounds, securing two takedowns before finishing off NIU’s Austin Stewart with 24 seconds left in the first period to keep Cal Poly’s hopes for a comeback alive.
Unfortunately, a win by decision at 197 pounds locked up the dual win for the Huskies. Despite the dual already being out of reach, Tinker took the mat at heavyweight looking to put on a show for the Mustang faithful — and he did just that. The 22nd-ranked heavyweight in the nation snagged three takedowns and a 4-point near fall to capture a commanding 15-0 technical fall at 5:15. It was Tinker’s eighth win by technical fall this season and fifth in a dual.
The Mustangs capped the night against Pac-12 rival and No. 15-ranked Little Rock (15-3, 2-0 Pac-12), looking to avenge a tightly-contested 22-19 defeat to the Trojans in the quarterfinals of the NWCA National Duals just over a month ago. However, Little Rock won six matches, including three bonus-point victories, to escape San Luis Obispo with a 25-14 win on Friday night.
Redshirt sophomore Koda Holeman, ranked No. 29 in the country at 125 pounds, opened the dual by securing a narrow 1-0 win by way of a riding time point. He went 1-1 on the night to move to 18-9 on the season and 10-3 in duals.
The next match at 133 pounds was the most highly anticipated one of the night as No. 2 Zeth Romney squared off against No. 8 Nasir Bailey from Little Rock. Romney was leading the 2024 NCAA All-American 2-1 with 30 seconds left in the bout when Bailey earned a late takedown and 3-point near fall to grab an 8-2 decision. At the NWCA National Duals in January, Romney pinned the 2024 133-pound Pac-12 champion. Following Friday’s results, Romney is now 12-3 on the season.
Chance secured Cal Poly’s second of four victories in the dual with Little Rock at 149 pounds. The eighth-ranked 149 pounder defeated No. 12 Jordan Williams by a 7-2 decision. It was Chance’s second victory over Williams this season and helped him finish 2-0 on the day. Chance improved to 13-1 overall and 10-1 in duals, and now has an impressive 31 takedowns in duals this season.
Daschle earned the next victory for the Mustangs at 184 pounds, using a takedown and a 4-point near fall in the third period to capture a 14-6 major decision over Triston Wills. The redshirt freshman went 2-0 across the duals to improve to 12-7 on the year.
Tinker ended the night on a high note for the Mustangs by picking up an 11-3 major decision at heavyweight with three takedowns and over two minutes of riding time. His performance Friday helped him improve to 20-5 overall this season and 11-1 in duals. Tinker continued dominating his opponents, grabbing his 18th and 19th bonus-point win of the season and the St. Louis, Missouri native has now won his last 10 matches.
Cal Poly (4-9, 0-2 Pac-12) travels to Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday, Feb. 23, at 1 p.m. for its final dual of the season.
