BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — In its final dual of the season, Cal Poly wrestling used some key bonus-point victories to secure a dramatic 23-20 victory at Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday while wrestling outdoors on CSUB’s Main Soccer Field.
The two Pac-12 foes split the 10 bouts — winning five each — but bonus-point wins by the Mustangs at 125, 157 and 174 pounds allowed Cal Poly to emerge victorious in the “Feud on the Field.” The Mustangs wrestled Sunday’s dual without two key starters in Chance Lamer — ranked No. 9 at 149 pounds — and Trevor Tinker, No. 22 at heavyweight.
Redshirt sophomore Koda Holeman helped Cal Poly get off to a roaring start in the dual. The 29th-ranked 125-pounder in the country secured four takedowns in a 22-8 major decision victory over CSUB’s Eathon Rider. Holeman improved to 19-9 overall and 11-3 in duals this season with the victory.
No. 7-ranked Zeth Romney accepted a forfeit at 133 pounds to move to 13-3 on the year and give Cal Poly an early 10-0 lead. Then the Roadrunners responded with back-to-back wins by decision at 141 and 149 pounds as redshirt sophomore Korbin Shepherd and true freshman Hercules Windrath both dropped tight 3-1 decisions.
The Mustangs fired back with three consecutive victories to gain a stranglehold on the dual. First, graduate student Legend Lamer, ranked 29th in the country, shut out his opponent at 157 pounds, rolling to a 16-0 technical fall win at 4:17 with a pair of 4-point near falls. He improved to 12-8 on the year.
Luka Wick, ranked No. 25 in the nation at 165 pounds, used a first-period takedown and a third-period escape to grab a 4-3 victory over Guillermo Escobedo and improve to 11-6 overall and 9-3 in duals.
At 174 pounds, redshirt junior Kendall La Rosa gave the Mustangs a commanding 23-6 dual advantage with a resounding victory. He secured six takedowns en route to a dominant 20-4 technical fall at 5:47.
The three bonus-point wins by Cal Poly allowed the Mustangs to stave off a late charge by the Roadrunners, who won the final three bouts by pin, technical fall and decision.
It marked the fourth straight win for the Mustangs over CSUB.
With the regular season now over, Cal Poly will now get ready to travel to Corvallis to compete in the Pac-12 Championships hosted by Oregon State on Thursday, March 6.
