CORVALLIS, Ore. — Trevor Tinker captured the conference title at heavyweight to secure a berth to the NCAA Championships, and Zeth Romney and Chance Lamer also punched their tickets to nationals to highlight action for Cal Poly wrestling at the 2025 Pac-12 Championships on Thursday at Oregon State’s Gill Coliseum.
A total of five Cal Poly wrestlers advanced to the championship match in their respective weight class — Tinker (285), Romney (133), Koda Holeman (125), Luka Wick (165) and Daschle Lamer (184).
Tinker dominated his opponents en route to becoming the second wrestler in program history to win a Pac-12 title at heavyweight and the first since Seth Woodhill in 1993. Seeded second at 285 pounds, Tinker started his championship run by throttling No. 3 seed Brett Mower from Oregon State in the semifinals — ranked No. 27 in the country by FloWrestling. He silenced Mower, rolling to a 11-0 major decision with over six minutes of riding time to earn a spot in the first-place match.
In the championship match, Tinker squared off against No. 1 seed and No. 20-ranked Jake Andrews from Cal State Bakersfield, who he lost to in the first-place match at the Roadrunner Open on Nov. 24. The 22nd-ranked heavyweight avenged that defeat in emphatic fashion, earning his second shutout victory of the tournament by an 8-0 major decision. The win allowed Tinker to secure an automatic berth to nationals and book his third straight trip to the NCAA Championships. The St. Louis, Missouri native upped his winning streak to 12 with the two victories and improved to 22-5 on the year.
After earning a major decision in his semifinal match, Romney squared off against Little Rock’s Nasir Bailey for the third time this season in the 133-pound championship. The highly-anticipated rubber match between the two top-10 ranked wrestlers lived up to the hype as it took overtime to decide a victor. No. 7-ranked Romney did his best to prevent No. 6-ranked and 2024 All-American Bailey from repeating as Pac-12 champion, but a takedown in the first overtime period allowed Bailey to do just that. Despite the result, Romney locked up a berth to NCAAs for the second straight year and will carry a 14-4 record into the tournament.
Wick and Daschle also suffered heartbreaking overtime defeats in the first-place matches in their respective weight classes. Wick battled Little Rock’s Joseph Bianchi in the 165-pound championship match. The two split a pair of tightly-contested regular season meetings, and an escape from both wrestlers forced the match to go into overtime. Unfortunately, Wick, the third seed, was unable to pull off the upset over top-seeded Bianchi as a takedown in the first overtime period did him in. Daschle was leading his 184-pound championship match against TJ McDonnell from Oregon State 5-2 with riding time when McDonnell grabbed a takedown with less than five seconds remaining to force overtime. In the extra period, McDonnell earned an early takedown to prevent Daschle from capturing an automatic berths to NCAAs.
Based on his national ranking of 30th, Wick still has a chance to earn an at-large bid to NCAAs.
After falling to No. 12-ranked Jordan Williams from Little Rock in the semifinals, Chance rallied and secured a commanding 19-4 technical fall victory to place third at 149 pounds and punch his ticket to NCAAs for the third consecutive season. The eighth-ranked 149-pounder will carry a 14-2 record into NCAAs.
Holeman cruised to a 16-2 major decision in his semifinal bout to earn his spot in the first-place match at 125 pounds. No. 29 Holeman fell to No. 13 Maximo Renteria from Oregon State in the championship match and then was pinned by CSUB’s Richard Castro-Sandoval in a true-second place match that would have sent Holeman to the NCAAs automatically.
In his final Pac-12 Championship, graduate student and three-time NCAA qualifier Legend Lamer finished third at 157 pounds. Redshirt sophomore Cash Stewart also placed third at 174 pounds in his first appearance at the conference championships.
As a team, Cal Poly placed third out of the four schools with 70 points.
The 2025 NCAA Championships will take place March 20-22 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. In addition to Cal Poly’s three automatic NCAA qualifiers, several Mustangs could earn at-large berths to the NCAA Championships, which will be announced on Tuesday, March 11.
