SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — With the conference championships less than two weeks away, Cal Poly wrestling heads to Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday for its final regular season dual.
The Mustangs will battle the Roadrunners outdoors on CSUB’s Main Soccer Field at noon Sunday as part of a special “Feud on the Field” event. You can watch the dual live on the CSUB Athletics YouTube. Live scoring will also be available via TrackWrestling.Follow Cal Poly wrestling on X/Twitter (@CalPolyWrestle) for updates throughout the dual.
LAST TIME ON THE MAT: Last Friday, Feb. 14, the Mustangs dropped their final two home duals, falling short to Northern Illinois 25-19 and No. 15 Little Rock 25-14. Redshirt juniors Trevor Tinker (285 pounds) and Chance Lamer (149), and redshirt freshman Daschle Lamer (184) all went undefeated (2-0) across the two duals.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN: Sunday’s dual in Bakersfield marks the Mustangs’ first action away from Mott Athletics Center since sending 11 wrestlers to the Oaks Invitational hosted by Menlo College on Feb. 1. Cal Poly has not wrestled in a dual away from Mott Athletics Center since taking part in the NWCA National Duals on Jan. 10-11 in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Sunday’s showdown with the Roadrunners will be the Mustangs only true road dual this season.
HEADED BACK OUTDOORS: Sunday’s action will be the Mustangs’ second dual outdoors this season. On Nov. 16, Cal Poly hosted its first outdoor dual since 2019, falling short to Stanford, ranked No. 14 at the time, 33-12 at O’Neill Green prior to the final Cal Poly home football game this season.
SEVEN RANKED STANGS: For the first time in over two months, the Mustangs currently boast seven nationally ranked wrestlers, according to the College Wrestling Report. Redshirt sophomore Zeth Romney leads the way at No. 9 at 133 pounds, Chance is No. 11 at 149 pounds, Tinker No. 25 at heavyweight, redshirt junior Luka Wick No. 27 at 165 pounds, redshirt sophomore Koda Holeman No. 29 at 125 pounds, graduate student Legend Lamer No. 31 at 157 pounds and Daschle No. 33 at 184 pounds.
ON A ROLL: Tinker will carry a 10-match winning streak in Sunday’s dual with the Roadrunners where he will face No. 20-ranked Jake Andrews, who he lost to by an 8-1 decision in the first-place match at the Roadrunner Open on Nov. 24. The two-time NCAA qualifier is 20-5 overall this season and 11-1 duals, winning 19 of his matches via bonus points and securing eight victories by way of technical fall. He has a team-high 32 takedowns in duals this season.
SCOUTING THE ROADRUNNERS: CSUB is 5-13 overall this season and 0-2 in Pac-12 duals, most recently suffering a 30-11 home defeat to Cal Baptist on Friday night. The Roadrunners fell at home to No. 15 Little Rock 41-6 a week ago and lost 25-16 at Oregon State on Feb. 2. CSUB’s five victories came against Michigan State 21-14, Southeast Community College 41-6, SIUE 19-18, American 28-9 and Central Michigan 21-20. In addition to Andrews, CSUB’s other ranked wrestler is No. 4 AJ Ferrari at 197 pounds. Ferrari won the NCAA title at 197 pounds in 2021 while wrestling at Oklahoma State and is 13-0 this season. Last year, Cal Poly crushed the Roadrunners in San Luis Obispo, winning three matches by fall and two by technical fall en route to a dominant 43-3 victory.
TOP 15 STANGS: For several weeks, Cal Poly held a national ranking of 15th in the country in the InterMat Team Tournament rankings, marking the program’s highest national ranking in three years. On Feb. 22, 2022, the Mustangs checked in at No. 10 in the same rankings, marking the first time in 39 years the program achieved a top 10 ranking. This marks the fifth straight season Cal Poly has achieved a top 25 national ranking as a team.
UP NEXT: After wrapping up the regular season in Bakersfield, Cal Poly will return home to prepare for the Pac-12 Championships hosted by Oregon State on Thursday, March 6, in Corvallis.
