MESQUITE, Nev. – Senior Baron Szeto chalked up five birdies to sit in 13th position and sophomore Reese Sato (above) totaled four more to climb to 19th as the Cal Poly men’s golf program – opening its spring campaign Sunday morning at Eastern Kentucky’s Mesquite Desert Classic – resides in seventh.
At the par-72, 7,010-yard Casablanca Course, Szeto – Cal Poly’s leading scorer entering 2025 and the 87th ranked player in Division I – recorded birdies on three of the initial six holes. He carded a pair of double bogeys later in the round to finish with a one-under 71, six shots behind leader Dane Huddleston of Utah Valley.
Sato’s four birdies were leveled by four bogeys for an even-par 72. Sophomore Leo Metzger and freshman Nolan Kuszyk each sit two shots behind sharing 36th position after both recorded three birdies.
Junior Sean Lehman, meanwhile, finished with a three-over 75 and enters the second round in 43rd spot with two birdies.
As a program, Cal Poly finished with a three-over 291, 13 shots behind leader Seattle in the 12-program field.
