Cal Poly Comeback Falls Just Short Against Fullerton Thursday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Three Mustangs scored in double figures to help erase a 13 point second half deficit, Cal Poly women's basketball saw its comeback bid fall just short as the Mustangs fell at home to Cal State Fullerton Thursday, 67-64.
Senior guard Annika Shah scored a team-high 20 points on 8-14 shooting, marking her sixth game of scoring at least 20 points. Shah also moved up in the Cal Poly career scoring ranks to 11th. Sophomore forward Mary Carter finished with 16 points and nine rebounds while redshirt sophomore forward Sierra Lichtie added 15 points and six rebounds.
The Titans also had three players score in double figures as Cal State Fullerton won the battle in shooting percentage, points in the paint, points off turnovers, second chance points and bench scoring.
Cal Poly got off to a strong start to begin the game, making six of their first eight shots. The Mustangs finished the opening quarter shooting 58 percent and led it 19-18.
However, the Mustangs struggled to score in the second quarter as Cal State Fullerton outscored them 19-7 for the quarter which included a 15-0 to close the first half as the Titans led 37-26 at halftime.
After going down by 13 with nine minutes to go in the third, Cal Poly started to slowly chip away at the Cal State Fullerton lead. A 9-0 run got the Mustangs back within four with seven minutes left in the third. By the end of the third, Cal Poly found themselves only trailing by three.
Shah opened the fourth quarter with a three to tie the game at 52-52. The teams went back and forth from there as Fullerton was able to go up by six with four minutes left. Cal Poly then got back within three with a minute to go.
Down by three and Cal State Fullerton with the ball with 18 seconds left, senior guard Sidney Richards came up with a big steal to get the ball back for the Mustangs. On their final possession, the Mustangs had three looks from three to tie it but all three came up empty.
Cal Poly will look to bounce back Saturday when hosting CSUN at 2 p.m. inside Mott Athletics Center.
