RIVERSIDE – Freshman guard Peter Bandelj (above) led three Mustangs in double-digit scoring figures with 12 points Saturday evening, but the Cal Poly men's basketball program never led at UC Riverside, dropping an 80-62 decision inside SRC Arena.
Guards Isaac Jessup and Jarred Hyder each finished with 10 points for Cal Poly (8-15, 2-9), which trailed by double digits early during the second half before cutting its deficit to three points with 16-and-a-half minutes to play. Kept to a 34.0 (18-for-53) percent field goal mark, however, Cal Poly – sinking 10 three-pointers Saturday, but outrebounded, 47-32 – saw a two-game win streak snapped.
Cal Poly graduate guard Mac Riniker grabbed a game high 10 rebounds to record his top total as a Mustang.
Cal Poly next returns home to host Hawai'i on Thursday, Feb. 6. Tip time on ESPN+ is 7 p.m.
Held to a 2-for-11 shooting start, Cal Poly found itself trailing after seven-and-a-half minutes, 15-5. The Mustangs cut their deficit to 28-23 after Bandelj knocked down Cal Poly's fifth three-pointer of the opening half with four minutes to go, but UC Riverside responded with an 8-0 run to regain a double-digit lead. Held to a 30.0 (9-for-30) percent first-half field goal mark, Cal Poly trailed at the break, 39-28.
Facing a 41-30 deficit early in the second half, the Mustangs received a Riniker three-pointer before Bandelj produced a layup and another three on successive possessions to shorten the gap to 41-38.
The Highlanders, however, responded by scoring on five of their ensuing seven possessions and, with a corresponding 14-3 run, went up 55-41 with 11 minutes to play.
