SAN LUIS OBISPO – Graduate Owen Koonce scored a game high 20 points and fellow guard Jarred Hyder finished with 18 Thursday evening as the Cal Poly men's basketball program – shooting 65.4 percent from the floor during the second half against Hawai'i – produced a 79-63 victory inside Mott Athletics Center.
Senior guard Isaac Jessup and junior forward Aaron Price, Jr., (above) each added nine points for Cal Poly (9-15, 3-9), which trailed Hawai'i (13-10, 5-7), 55-54, with nine minutes remaining. Freshman guard Peter Bandelj then placed the Mustangs in front with a jumper before Koonce scored on three straight possessions to help push the lead to 63-55. Hyder next added a jumper as the Mustangs – who limited Hawai'i to a 36.7 (11-for-30) percent second-half field goal mark – led by as much as 14 down the stretch.
Prevailing for the third time in its last four Big West matchups, Cal Poly outscored Hawai'i during the second half, 45-28, while committing just nine turnovers.
With Price, Jr., grabbing a game high seven rebounds, Cal Poly trailed Hawai'i just three times, never by more than three points and for only two total minutes.
Cal Poly next opens a two-game road trip on Thursday, Feb. 13, visiting Cal State Fullerton at 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
Sinking four three-pointers inside the opening nine minutes, Cal Poly carved out a 20-13 advantage midway the opening period. The Mustangs still maintained a 34-30 lead after Jessup sank his third three-pointer of the half with three minutes to go, but Hawai'i – which shot 52.0 (13-for-25) in the period – kept Cal Poly scoreless down the stretch with center Tanner Christensen's layup in the final seconds placing the Rainbow Warriors up at the break, 35-34.
The Mustangs, however, sank their opening two attempts of the second half to regain the lead with a Hyder three-pointer furthering the advantage to 43-37 with 16 minutes remaining.
Cal Poly still led 52-46 with 12 minutes on the clock before Hawai'i chalked up a 9-2 run to take its last lead of the night.
