SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly women’s basketball’s suffocating defense led the Mustangs to a 59-31 win at home Monday night over NAIA Chapman University.
Sophomore guard Vanessa McManus, who Monday was named the Big West Player of the Week, led the way with a game-high 14 points for the Mustangs (2-4). Sophomore Avery Knapp added nine points.
Cal Poly’s defense limited Chapman to just 18-percent shooting from the field. They also forced 24 turnovers.
It was a close game in the first quarter, tied 10-10 at one point before the Mustangs finished the quarter on a 6-0 run. Cal Poly separated itself in the second quarter, taking a 20 point lead at one point.
In the third, the Mustangs held the Panthers to just five points as they continued to extend their lead.
Cal Poly will now have a 10-day break before opening Big West play at home Thursday, Dec. 4 against Cal State Fullerton.
