SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly men’s soccer program forced Cal State Fullerton goalkeeper Emanuel Padilla into four second-half saves Wednesday evening, but goals either side of halftime from Titans midfielder Jose de la Torre and forward Mario Carlos relegated the Mustangs to a 2-0 setback.
Senior goalkeeper Nicky McCune finished with three saves for Cal Poly (4-4-4, 1-1-1), which saw its program record 13-match home unbeaten run snapped by Cal State Fullerton (5-4-4, 2-1-0). Prior to Wednesday, Cal Poly’s last home loss occurred Oct. 15, 2023.
The Mustangs also entered Wednesday’s game unbeaten in their last seven.
With Wednesday’s defeat, Cal Poly slipped to fourth place in the Big West table, remaining on four points after being overtaken by Cal State Fullerton. The Mustangs, however, trail joint leaders Cal State Bakersfield and UC Santa Barbara by just three points.
The Titans registered six shot attempts inside the opening 10 minutes of Wednesday’s match before finding the eventual game-winner in the 20th after de la Torre received a pass from Carlos inside the penalty area and fired past multiple Mustang defenders and McCune to score inside the right post.
Cal State Fullerton then doubled its lead in the 64th with defender Nick Relerford playing a pass from the center circle upfield for a streaking Carlos, who bested McCune at the right post once more.
After recording just one shot on target during the first half, Cal Poly saw freshman defender Michael Vick turned away seconds before the Carlos goal. Junior forward Jack Civitts fired an attempt over the crossbar in the 75th before a header from junior defender Parker Owens was snatched by Padilla in the 80th. Padilla made two more saves in the 87th and 88th to preserve the shutout.
Cal Poly plays two of its next three matches at home, continuing Saturday, Oct. 11 against UC San Diego. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
