WEEKLY SNEAK PEEK
Volleyball Hosts Blue-Green Rivalry Match Before Hawai’i Trip
- The Mustangs played seven sets over a pair of road losses, hitting .183 against UC San Diego (0-3) and Long Beach State (1-3). Although the Mustangs were error-prone through the weekend, four of those seven sets were decided by two points apiece and Cal Poly showed plenty of fight in the face of adversity.
- Kendall Beshear was far and away Cal Poly's best hitter during a tough weekend on the road. The sophomore outside hitter paced all Mustangs with 27 kills at a rate of 3.86 per set and tallied the third-most digs on the team (16). Building on her already impressive jump serve, Beshear also tallied another pair of aces over the two matches, raising her to second in the conference for total service aces.
- True freshman Charlotte Kelly continues to stand out as a crucial defensive cog in Cal Poly's net-front presence. Kelly totaled 10 block assists for a team-leading 1.43 per set over the weekend, which included six against Long Beach State to reset her single-match career high. She also contributed seven kills despite playing a rotational role in the lineup.
- The yearly Blue-Green rivalry comes to Mott Athletics Center again this season, with the Gauchos visiting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. After losing all four matches to UCSB in 2023-24, the Mustangs made a statement last year, sweeping six sets from their central coast counterpart. Cal Poly then travels across the Pacific Ocean for a 2024 Big West Championship rematch against Hawai’i on Friday at 10 p.m. (PT).
Men's Soccer Hosts Pair of Big West Matches
- Cal Poly returns home to Mustang Memorial Field to play three of its next four matches, starting Wednesday, Oct. 8 against Cal State Fullerton and continuing Saturday, Oct. 11 versus UC San Diego. Both matches kick off at 7 p.m.
- The Mustangs went unbeaten during last week’s Big West-opening schedule, defeating UC Davis, 2-1, on ESPNU behind junior Sean McTague’s 86th-minute game-winner before drawing 1-1 at UC Irvine.
- Cal Poly enters Wednesday’s home matchup with Cal State Fullerton in third place in the Big West table on four points, trailing early leaders Cal State Bakersfield and UC Santa Barbara by two points.
Women’s Soccer Travels to Hawai’i Thursday, Hosts Titans Sunday
- Unbeaten in its last three conference matches, the Cal Poly women’s soccer team looks to keep the momentum rolling this week against a pair of Big West opponents.
- First, the Mustangs make the trip to Hawai’i to face the Rainbow Wahine at 9 p.m. PDT on Thursday. Then Cal Poly returns home for a quick turnaround match against Cal State Fullerton at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Spanos. The Titans are still unbeaten this season (10-0-2 overall, 3-0-1 Big West) and sit atop the conference standings alongside UC Irvine with 10 points.
- Last week, the Mustangs secured a 2-2 draw in a hard-fought battle with Cal State Bakersfield at Spanos. In that match, senior defender Brennan Cole headed home her third goal of the season in the 36th minute and midfielder Madelyn Dougherty registered her Big West-leading seventh assist of the year on the tally. The seven assists are tied for the sixth-most in a season in program history.
- Star forward Jessie Halladay also blasted home her conference-leading seventh goal of the season in the second half of the match off an assist from junior forward Annika Smith. Halladay currently leads the Big West in points (16) and shots (47) as well.
- Cal Poly is still unbeaten at home this season (1-0-5) through six matches, matching its longest home unbeaten streak overall since a 4-0-2 stretch during the 2022 season. With a result on Sunday against Fullerton, the Mustangs would secure their longest home unbeaten streak since a nine-match stretch spanning the 2012 and 2013 seasons.
- Both matches this week will be streamed live on ESPN+. Sunday’s match is part of the program’s Latino Heritage Month celebration and it’s also Sunday Funday, so all kids 13 and under can get into the match for free! You can purchase tickets to the pivotal Big West showdown HERE.
