BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Cal Poly continued its dominant run through the Big West, extending its conference-best win streak to seven matches with a commanding straight-sets (25-18, 25-19, 25-16) victory over Cal State Bakersfield on the road Friday afternoon.
The Mustangs (18-5, 9-2 Big West) were in control from start to finish, showcasing a lethal and consistent offense that the Roadrunners (5-18, 2-9) struggled to contain. Cal Poly hit .427 and recorded at least 17 kills in every set.
The Roadrunners kept the score close early in the first set, but Cal Poly's offensive firepower proved too much. The Mustangs pulled away with a .417 hitting percentage, committing just two attack errors. A key 6-1 run late in the set, capped by a kill from hometown star Emma Fredrick, turned a narrow 20-17 lead into a 25-18 victory.
The second set saw CSUB challenge the Mustangs with a stronger service game, recording two aces against Cal Poly's six service errors. However, Cal Poly's efficient attack once again weathered the storm. The Mustangs responded with their best clip of the match, posting a staggering .484 attack percentage with 19 kills. Cal Poly finished the set on a 9-4 run to seal a 25-19 win and take a firm 2-0 match lead.
Cal Poly raced out to a sizable lead in the third set and never relented. The Mustang defense stifled the Roadrunner attack, holding them to a .229 hitting percentage while their own offense remained steady. A final kill from Kendall Beshear ended the match, giving Cal Poly a 25-16 set win and a decisive straight-sets victory.
Playing in her hometown of Bakersfield, Emma Fredrick was spectacular, putting on an offensive clinic. Fredrick finished with a match-high 17 kills while hitting an impressive .500, adding two service aces and two blocks for a total of 19.5 points.
She was brilliantly supported by Emme Bullis, who orchestrated the offense with 38 assists and 14 digs for a double-double, and Kendall Beshear, who provided a formidable second option with 12 kills and 14.5 points.
With their seventh consecutive conference win, the Cal Poly Mustangs remain two matches behind first-place UC Davis. Cal Poly stays in the valley but heads south to continue its road weekend at CSUN on Saturday.
