SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After the final day of regular season play concluded on Thursday night, the Cal Poly women’s soccer team learned they will be the No. 2 seed in the Big West Championships.
With the seed, the Mustangs (8-2-9, 6-2-2 Big West) receive a first-round bye from the opening round of the six-team tournament and await the winner of Sunday’s first round match between No. 3 seed Cal State Fullerton (13-2-3, 6-2-2 BW) and No. 6 seed Cal State Bakersfield (8-8-2, 5-4-1 BW) at Titan Stadium. Cal Poly will face either CSUF or CSUB in the Big West semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 6, at 4 p.m. at CSUN’s Matador Soccer Field with the winner advancing to the championship match.
Entering Thursday night, Cal Poly was clinging to first place in the Big West regular season standings with a 2-point lead over CSUN and UC Santa Barbara, who were tied for second place. The Gauchos fell 1-0 at UC San Diego, while CSUN secured a dramatic 2-1 come-from-behind home victory over Long Beach State to earn the Big West regular season title and No. 1 seed. In its regular season finale this past Sunday, Cal Poly had a chance to secure the Big West regular season championship outright with a victory over CSUN, but secured a 1-1 draw with the Matadors instead.
CSUN will host the winner of No. 4 UC Irvine and No. 5 UCSB at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 6, in the other Big West semifinal.
The Big West Championship match will take place on Sunday, Nov. 9, at 1 p.m. at Matador Soccer Field.
