SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — With ten birdies in her victory at the Ptarmigan Ram Classic and a scoring average of 72.75 through her first three collegiate tournaments, true freshman Taylor Baker has immediately cemented her status as one of the Big West's most promising players.
Her rapid ascent was acknowledged with a Big West Golfer of the Month honor, coinciding with her first collegiate win.
"Earning Big West Golfer of the Month and her first collegiate win in her very first month of Division I competition is an extraordinary achievement. Taylor has hit the ground running; her composure, skill, and competitive fire are already setting her apart." (Head Coach Courtney Roberts)
Cal Poly charged to a share of second place at the Ptarmigan Ram Classic, though the tournament was cut short by weather. The Mustangs set the pace with a historic opening round, firing a program-record 272 (-16) to seize a five-stroke lead. This beat their previous single-round best by four strokes. Though inclement weather canceled the final round, their explosive start was enough to secure a tie for second at 571 (-5) with conference rival Cal State Fullerton.
Baker announced her breakout by matching the program record with a stunning 65 (-7) in the first round of that tournament. Baker never touched par during that opening round and finished the 36-hole event at 138 (-6), becoming the first Mustang to win an individual title since Kaylyn Noh in 2022. Noh was, coincidentally, the last Mustang to win Women's Golfer of the Month.
The previous week at the Leadership & Golf Invitational, Baker shot a pair of under-par rounds, finishing just three strokes back (219) of teammate Nicole Koong to tie for 14th place. During the season-opening Dick McGuire Invitational in New Mexico, Baker (225) tied for 37th overall as the team's second-best performer.
The Mustangs are now on a two-week break before returning to action at the Dale McNamara Invitational in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, for their final event of the fall season.
