HONOLULU — Cal Poly delivered a commanding performance on the islands Friday evening, sweeping Hawai'i (25-20, 25-14, 25-22) for the program's first sweep over the Rainbow Wahine since 2019.
The victory marks Cal Poly's third straight-sets conference win of the season, solidifying a strong 13-5 (4-2 Big West) record for the first half of 2025.
The Mustangs controlled the match from the first serve, leveraging a powerful offense and a stifling defense to hand Hawai'i its tenth loss of the season. Cal Poly's .313 team hitting percentage dwarfed Hawai'i's .104, marking the Mustangs' ninth match this season with a .300 or better clip.
The first set was a tight and competitive affair, featuring eight ties. Hawai'i kept pace early, but Cal Poly began to pull away after a 14-14 deadlock, going on a 4-1 run to take a lead they would not relinquish, closing out the set 25-20.
Cal Poly left no doubt in the second set, exploding for 19 kills with a staggering .459 hitting percentage. The Mustangs raced out to a massive lead, never trailing or allowing a tie, and capitalized on a series of Hawai'i errors to secure a dominant 25-14 win.
The final set saw the Rainbow Wahine fight to extend the match, but Cal Poly consistently answered every challenge. Despite a late push from Hawai'i, the Mustangs sealed the sweep with a 25-22 victory.
Emma Fredrick led all players with 12 kills and added 14 digs for her sixth double-double. Kendall Beshear was also a key contributor with 9 kills and her third consecutive match with multiple aces. Chloe Leluge was remarkably efficient, posting 8 kills with a .615 hitting percentage, while Annabelle Thalken provided a major spark off the bench with 9 errorless kills and two blocks. Emme Bullis tallied 32 assists and secured a double-double with 11 digs, guiding the team to its high offensive efficiency.
With this statement win, Cal Poly remains third in the conference standings ahead of a homestand next weekend, where they will welcome UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton.
