Cal Poly Nearly Takes Set Off No. 15 Florida State
9/6/2024 6:00:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
AUBURN, Ala. — The Cal Poly volleyball team held its own against the 15th-ranked team in the country on Friday in the Plainsman Invitational and nearly won a set against Florida State, but the Mustangs ultimately fell to the Seminoles 3-0 (26-24, 25-19, 25-19) in their second match of the Auburn-Troy Tournament.
Redshirt senior outside hitter Tommi Stockham continued her double-digit kill streak to open the season, registering a match-high 14 kills. True freshman outside hitter Kendall Beshear, who had an impressive collegiate debut against Auburn on Thursday, finished with 10 kills and redshirt sophomore middle blocker Breklyn Pulling posted a team-high .417 hitting percentage with seven kills. Redshirt junior setter Emme Bullis had 36 assists and junior libero London Haberfield recorded a team-high 18 digs.
Cal Poly (2-3) fell behind 23-18 in the opening set against the Seminoles (4-0), but went on a 6-0 run thanks to four kills from Stockham to take a 24-23. However, the Mustangs late rally would fall just short as FSU won the next three points to take a tightly-contested first set 26-24.
Despite the scorelines, the Mustangs held their own against the high-powered Seminoles in the second and third sets and went point-for-point with the 2023 NCAA Tournament qualifiers nearly the entire match.
Cal Poly finished with more kills than FSU, but committed 20 attack errors.
The Mustangs finish off the Plainsman Invitational co-hosted by Auburn and Troy at noon Saturday against the Troy Trojans (2-2). You can watch the match live on ESPN+ HERE.
