Cal Poly Survives North Texas Comeback Attempt in Tournament Winner
9/13/2024 7:15:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
LAS VEGAS — Cal Poly volleyball (5-3) heads into its final non-conference tournament of the season with plenty of momentum after outlasting the Mean Green's (25-22, 25-18, 25-27, 20-25, 15-8) reverse sweep attempt.
Despite a hard-fought effort by North Texas to upset the Mustangs, budding star Kendall Beshear and de-facto ace Tommi Stockham both collected double-doubles to help keep Cal Poly's offense afloat in a nail-biting tiebreaker victory.
In stark contrast to yesterday's opening match, the Mustangs initially struggled to find consistent offense against their opponents. North Texas led by multiple points at times throughout the first set, including a 15-11 hole that Cal Poly eventually clawed out of to tie the set at 15-all.
The Mustangs were plagued by attacking errors in the opening set but still managed to come up with a 25-22 win in the end when North Texas seemed to be matching those errors.
Cal Poly built on the Mean Green's slip-ups with a strong 25-18 second set victory. That would spell the end of the Mustangs' momentum, however, as North Texas found solid footing in the next two sets. Cal Poly (.160 hitting percentage) and North Texas (.186) slugged out an ugly third set that saw the Mean Green eke out a 27-25 win after Cal Poly came down to force extra points despite being down 24-21 earlier in the set.
The fourth set was a similar story of North Texas outhitting the Mustangs, pulling together a .300 hitting percentage effort to force a tiebreaker set. Despite the attempted reverse sweep, an all-around team effort helped Cal Poly to seal the tiebreaker set (15-8), match, and tournament.
The Mustangs have now flipped a three-game losing streak into a three-game winning streak. As a result of Cal Poly's first tournament win of the season, Stockham was awarded All-Tournament Team MVP (3.50 K/S, 2.75 DIG/S, 5 SA) while Emme Bullis also received an All-Tournament Team nod (9.88 A/S, 2.00 DIG/S, 5 SA).
For just the fourth time in her career, Emme Bullis hit the half-century set assist mark in single game, tallying 50 assists against North Texas.
The Mustangs enjoyed a pair of double-doubles, the third of the season from Stockham (15 K, 17 DIG) while extending her double-digit kills streak to eight games, just as Beshear (15 K, 23 DIG) tallied her first career double-double.
Beshear's 23 digs was tied for the most by a Cal Poly player this season, tied for sixth-most in a single game by a Big West player this season, and the most by a Mustang pin hitter since Jamie Stivers in 2021.
