Stockham Posts Double-Digit Kills Again in Second Consecutive Sweep
9/12/2024 8:45:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
LAS VEGAS — The Mustangs continued dominating the competition with back-to-back sweeps since last weekend's victory over Troy. With the help of Tommi Stockham's 13-kill effort, Cal Poly (4-3) took down UNLV in a 25-22, 25-22, 25-21 show of force to bring its record back to a winning slant.
All three sets featured large multi-point leads from Cal Poly at times, but UNLV never gave up and always seemed to put together scoring runs that would narrow the gap. Regardless, the Mustangs relinquished their lead just twice throughout the entire match, with both of those coming during a contentious second set. Otherwise, Cal Poly flashed periods of dominance and pure control.
Stockham continued her dominance to kick off the 2024 season, tallying a double-digit kill total for the seventh time - all matches thus far. The redshirt senior hitter also reset her single-game mark for service aces (4) originally accomplished against UC San Diego in 2023. Stockham wrapped that all together with tying for the second-most digs (5) on the team during this match.
As a team, the Mustangs hit at a .267 rate as their offense remains one of the best among teams in the Big West. The top three kill-getters for Cal Poly during this game all hit well above .350, greatly helping the Mustangs in hitting percentage.
The Mustangs once again leaned on their youth, sporting a starting lineup that included three true freshmen: middle blocker Chloe Leluge, outside hitter Kendall Beshear, and libero Elif Hurriyet.
Leluge was fantastic and versatile as a middle blocker, as she has been in her young career thus far, collecting eight kills to pair with a single-game career high five total blocks. Her partner in the middle, Breklyn Pulling, also tallied eight kills while throwing up two blocks of her own.
Emme Bullis flashed her versatility as a setter and defensive expert, tallying 29 set assists - the seventh time this season she has collected at least 28 - while also co-leading Cal Poly with nine digs.
