SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After an historic run in the NCAA Championship last week reaching the semifinals for the first time in program history, Cal Poly beach volleyball made more history this week after being ranked No. 3 in the final AVCA national rankings, the highest in program history.
The Mustangs were ranked just behind this year's NCAA champions in USC and the national runner up in UCLA. Last week in Gulf Shores, Ala. Cal Poly made history by beating Arizona State and Florida State to become the first Division I team in Cal Poly's history to make a Final Four.
This year's team will go down as the best in Cal Poly history. They are the first team to go the NCAA Championship Semifinals, their No. 5 seed was the highest a Cal Poly team has ever received, their 31 wins this season are the most in program history, all in addition to this No. 3 ranking being the highest ever.
In addition, the Mustangs had four players be named AVCA All-Americans for the first time. They also had all five starting pairs earn All-Conference honors for the first time ever in addition to having the Big West Freshman of the Year, Big West Co-Coach of the Year, and Big West Pair of the Year. Assistant coach Angela Rock was also named AVCA National Assistant Coach of the Year.
Meanwhile, the No. 2 pair of junior Piper Ferch and freshman Erin Inskeep broke the program record for wins by a pair in a season with a 30-5 record this year.
Cal Poly won't be slowing down anytime soon either. Next year, the team is set to return 24 of the 25 players from this year's roster.
