Martinez, Walter Earn Big West Pair of the Week Honors

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Following a strong performance over the weekend at the Best in the West event in Laguna Beach against some of the top teams in the country, Cal Poly beach volleyball’s Izzy Martinez and Logan Walter have been named the Big West pair of the Week.
Martinez and Walter went 3-1 over the weekend with wins over No. 2 pairs from No. 1 Stanford, No. 4 USC, and No. 10 Long Beach State. With those wins, they improved their record as a pair to 23-2 this season. Martinez now has 99 career individual wins.
As a team, Cal Poly swept Long Beach State 5-0 but came up just short against No. 1 Stanford, No. 2 UCLA, and No. 4 USC, falling to each by a narrow margin of 3-2.
The No. 6 Mustangs, who are 21-5 on the season, host the premier regular season collegiate beach volleyball event in the country this weekend, the Center of Effort Challenge, welcoming seven of the top teams in the country to San Luis Obispo. The event is Friday and Saturday with the Mustangs playing two matches each day.
Friday, Cal Poly faces No. 13 Arizona State at 1:45 p.m. followed by No. 2 UCLA at 7 p.m. Then on Saturday, they take on No. 9 Cal at 12:45 p.m. and then one more match at some point between 2 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. depending on the results of the first three matches.
