SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly Beach Volleyball split its two matches at the first day of the Center of Effort Challenge Friday at home at Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex. The No. 6 Mustangs (22-6) took down No. 13 Arizona State 4-1 to begin the day before coming up just short of No. 2 UCLA, 3-2 in the evening.
In front of a packed home crowd, Cal Poly put on a show for its fans. Against the No. 13 Sun Devils, the Mustangs’ top four pairs all won in straight sets. At the No. 2 spot, the win by Logan Walter and Izzy Martinez was extra special as it marked Martinez’s 100th career victory. She’s just the fourth Mustang to reach 100 career wins.
Also collecting wins against Arizona State was the No. 1 duo of Ella Connor and Erin Inskeep, the No. 3 pair of Quinn Perry and Ashleigh Adams, and the No. 4 pair of Julia Westby and Elise Lenahan.
In their evening match against No. 2 UCLA, it was once again a back-and-forth close battle against the Bruins for a second week in a row. UCLA won at the No. 1 spot to start off. Perry and Adams then won at the No. 3 spot to even the duel up 1-1. For Perry, it was her 75th career victory.
Martinez and Walter then won in three sets at the No. 2 spot before the Bruins tied it back up 2-2 after winning in three sets at the No. 5 spot. The duel came down to the No. 4 pair, which also went to three sets. Unfortunately, Lenahan and Westby came up just short, losing in the third set 15-12.
Cal Poly continues play at the Center of Effort Challenge Saturday with two more matches. They will take on No. 9 Cal at 12:45 p.m. They will then play one more match later in the day with the time and opponent to be determined by results of their match and the other matches. The second match will take place sometime between 2 p.m. and 5:45 p.m.
