LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Highlighted by graduate student Davis Bove running the second-fastest men's 1,500-meter time in school history, six Cal Poly men's distance runners posted top-10 marks in program history at the Oxy Invitational on Saturday to officially wrap up regular season action for the Cal Poly track and field team.
A total of 14 Mustang distance runners took part in the meet hosted by Occidental College at Jack Kemp Stadium.
In the men's 1,500-meter, Cal Poly had a stellar showing as all seven athletes that ran the event recorded personal bests and four posted top-10 marks in program history. Bove led the way, moving to No. 2 in Cal Poly history with a time of 3:40.19 to finish seventh overall at the meet. The time for the LSU transfer was just .77 seconds off his personal best and is currently the 10th fastest ran in the West Region this season. Earlier this season, Bove also ran the third-fastest 5,000 in school history (13:48.0).
Freshman phenom Chris Caudillo broke into the top 10 in the 1,500, running the sixth-fastest time in program history (3:41.69) to place ninth overall. The Clovis native dropped over 2.5 seconds off his personal best and currently ranks No. 28 in the West Region in the event.
Junior Spencer Pickren moved to No. 8 in school history in the 1,500 with a lifetime best of 3:42.87, while Westwood ran an over four-second personal best (3:43.18) to earn No. 9 on Cal Poly's all-time list. Redshirt junior Erik Luu (3:51.34), and freshmen Mateo Malko-Allen (3:49.46) and Ethan Miller (3:51.70) all posted PRs in the 1,500 as well.
In the men's 800, sophomore Carson Smith ran the sixth-fastest time in school history (1:49.51) to place fourth overall and win his heat. The performance comes just a week after Smith ran the third-fastest 1,500 time (3:41.48) in school history — now fourth fastest — to take first at the Fresno State Invitational and earn Big West Men's Track Athlete of the Week honors for the first time in his career. Senior Quinton Alexander improved upon his ninth-best mark in program history in the 800 with a PR of 1:50.31.
Redshirt sophomore Michael Chambers recorded an over 13-second PR in the men's 3,000 steeplechase, running a time of 9:03.79 to secure third.
Sophomore Riley Cash highlighted performances for the Cal Poly women at the meet, running a season best of 4:35.41 in the 1,500 to place 13th.
Cal Poly will host the remainder of the Big West Track & Field Championships on Friday and Saturday at the Miller & Capriotti Athletics Complex.
