Mustangs Open Final Series of 2024 with 8-5 Victory Over Long Beach State
5/23/2024 9:45:00 PM | Baseball
After both teams began the game cold on offense, Dylan Kordic finally forced open the door with his team-leading second triple of the season despite being two outs deep in the bottom of the second. The Mustangs were unable to bring him home, but the extra-base knock was uplifting nonetheless.
As Jakob Wright crept toward the century mark for strikeouts on the season, the redshirt sophomore kept the Dirtbags hitless through the first two innings before they finally found a single through the short and third gap as well as runners on the corners. A sacrifice fly in the next at-bat gave Long Beach State its first run of the game.
Stafford threw out his conference-leading 23rd caught stealing of the season to end the Long Beach State second-inning offense, which now also takes him to 46 for his career and the third-best mark in Cal Poly Division I history. The 23 throw-downs this season are also the second-best single-season amount in the program's D1 era.
Stafford led off the third inning with a walk and sprinted all the way around to slide across home plate after Ryan Fenn placed a perfect hit into the left-center gap for an RBI-double, tying the game at one-all. For the second consecutive at-bat, Cal Poly notched an RBI-double as Joe Yorke went to the same area as Stafford for his hit.
The crowd had little time to sit as Alejandro Garza continued the run on doubles, hitting a ground-rule ball past the left field line's fence with that RBI-double taking the Mustangs to 3-1. Continuing the momentum gained for Cal Poly, Wright opened up the next frame with his 100th strikeout of the season, the first time in two years that a Mustang pitcher has reached triple digits.
Long Beach State cut the deficit in half with a one-out home run just inside the left field foul pole. The Mustangs immediately responded in the bottom of the fifth inning as Ryan Fenn picked up his second RBI-double of the game, this one batting Aaron Casillas and Jake Steels in for a 5-2 lead. Later in the inning, Kordic singled to left-center, adding a sixth run for Cal Poly.
The Mustangs scored for a third successive inning when Stafford converted a sacrifice bunt into an RBI as Zach Daudet came across to put Cal Poly up 7-2. Long Beach State found an answer in the top of the seventh as a Dirtbag batter cranked a two-run homer far past the right field wall to cut the deficit to three.
Yorke answered LBSU's pair of runs with a well-hit double, his second of the game, into the right-field corner. Garza advanced Yorke to third on a sacrifice bunt during the next at-bat. Even so, the Mustangs could not bring Yorke around but kept a 7-4 lead heading into the final two innings of game one.
The Dirtbags added another run in the eighth, but Cal Poly kept up with their opposition as Steels picked up an RBI-single in bringing Casillas home, keeping a three-run gap. Tanner Sagouspe came in for the ninth inning and successfully sealed his 9th save of the season as Wright would be awarded his 9th win.
