Cal Poly Comeback Attempt Thwarted by Dirtbags in Game Two
5/24/2024 9:30:00 PM | Baseball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Ryan Stafford continued his record-setting season with two more RBIs added to his league-leading total as the Mustangs outhit the Dirtbags Friday night. However, Long Beach State (25-28-1, 10-19 BW) squeezed out of some jams to down Cal Poly (34-22, 19-10 BW) by a 5-3 margin despite a hard-fought Mustang comeback attempt.
Steven Brooks, making his final start of the season, kicked off the game with a pair of strikeouts in the first inning to set the tone of game two. Two consecutive hits - a double from Stafford and RBI-single from Fenn - yielded Cal Poly's first run of the game to build on the momentum Brooks roused.
Long Beach State opened up in the third inning, loading the bases before doubling to right-center, which cleared all runners in a 3-RBI wave that took the Dirtbags ahead by two scores.
However, another pair of Mustang doubles in the bottom of that inning, one from Steels and a second from Stafford, from Cal Poly within one run of the LBSU lead.
The Dirtbags extended their lead after a near-foul ball doubled down the left field line and an RBI-single to right-center put LBSU up by two again. Brooks upped his strikeout total to 6 in four complete innings, stopping the Dirtbags from going on a scoring run.
Alejandro Garza scored in the bottom of the fourth as Cam Hoiland singled up the middle to answer Long Beach State's run on the inning's flip side.
That brought Cal Poly within one run again heading into the fifth. Continuing the recent surge for the Mustangs, Josh Volmerding relieved Brooks in the fifth and promptly struck out a pair to force LBSU's first scoreless frame since the second inning.
After a trio of quiet, scoreless innings from both sides, Long Beach State finally got the scoring back on with an RBI-single during the eighth inning to extend their lead back to two runs.
The Mustangs tried their hardest to respond in the bottom of the eighth, loading the bases with one out on the board, but Long Beach State completed a double play to get out of the inning.
In the final opportunities for Cal Poly, Long Beach State's closer threw consistent mid-90s fastballs that the Mustangs were unable to catch up to, earning the Dirtbags a series-tying victory.
The two Big West foes both end their respective seasons tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. after five Mustangs are honored in a Senior Day pregame ceremony.
