Cal Poly Walks Off in 7-6 Season Finale Win Over Long Beach State
5/25/2024 5:15:00 PM | Baseball
It was a season to remember as the Mustangs sealed third place in the Big West with this series win, which makes it the program's 18th top-four finish in the last 21 seasons of Larry Lee's tenure while also being the legendary coach's eighth season of 35 or more wins at the helm.
Cal Poly collected double-digit hits for the 19th time in the last 28 games en route to winning 32 of the last 46 games after the 2-7 start in February.
Prior to the season finale's first pitch, five senior Mustangs were honored by the team and home crowd as Ryan Baum, Aaron Casillas, Jake Steels, Evan Tomlinson, and Joe Yorke were set to play their final game in the green and gold.
Long Beach State scattered a trio of hits in the top of the first and even managed to barely skim the outside of the foul pole for an opening frame home run. Despite the quick momentum built by the Dirtbags, Jake Steels took the team lead for home runs (7) with his one-run shot to tie the game.
Wyatt King, with his second hit of the season, mimicked Steels and crushed a solo home run in the bottom of the second to put the Mustangs up by one.
On the defensive side, Griffin Naess began to roll as Cal Poly led, going from no strikeouts through almost three whole innings to striking out four consecutive batters.
However, Long Beach State found themselves with runners on the corners in the fifth with two outs and created a small rally, taking the lead on a two-RBI single. A second successive RBI-single put the Dirtbags up 4-2 in that same inning.
Jake Steels, for the second series in a row, exploded for a pair of homers after his second solo shot of the game to put Cal Poly within one score of the LBSU lead.
The Dirtbag offense ramped up again in the sixth, tripling and singling deep into the outfield to score one run on each of those respective hits, bringing LBSU to 6-3 over Cal Poly with 11 total hits through the game thus far.
After Christopher Downs held Long Beach State quiet and scoreless for two innings, the Mustangs finally got back on the board with Jake Steels collecting his second RBI of the game and the last of his Mustang career.
Joe Yorke, a fan favorite and possibly one of Cal Poly's most celebrated baseball players in recent memory, helped to put runners on the corners in his final career at-bat, which Alejandro Garza converted into a sacrifice fly RBI to make the score 6-5 LBSU.
The Mustangs saved the best for last as they rallied in the ninth inning to put six of seven batters on base, including when the bases were juiced with one out on the board.
Wyatt King - who had just one hit coming into this contest - came up big yet again with his third hit of the day and a 2-RBI double that scored both Dylan Kordic and Tate Shimao for a roaring walk off win. Despite being down three runs in the eighth, the Mustangs persevered to send their seniors off in style by overturning the deficit for a four run surge in the last two innings of their season.
