Steels Homers Twice to Lead Mustangs to Series Finale Win Over UCSD

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Senior center fielder Jake Steels had himself quite the day Sunday. He belted two home runs for three RBIs, four runs scored, and collected four hits to help lead Cal Poly baseball to a 7-5 win over UC San Diego in its final road game of 2024.
Junior second baseman Ryan Fenn, senior first baseman Joe Yorke, and freshman third baseman Alejandro Garza each had RBIs. Fenn and senior shortstop Aaron Casillas also both had two hits on the day.
Starting pitcher Griffin Naess went 4.2 innings allowing just three hits and two earned runs. Freshman reliever Josh Volmerding came in to get the win after throwing two innings and giving up just one run and two hits. Sophomore Tanner Sagouspe then came in to pitch the final 2.1 innings and earn his eighth save of the season.
Steels led the game off with a home run on the first pitch of the game to get the Mustangs (33-21, 18-9 BW) quickly on the board. He then came up again with a runner on first and blasted another homer to right field to push the lead to 3-0.
Steels is now tied with junior catcher Ryan Stafford for the team lead in home runs with six.
Cal Poly put the pedal down in the fifth, scoring three runs. With runners at the corners, Fenn put down a fantastic bunt single down the third base line, scoring Steels. Yorke then singled up the middle to bring in Stafford before Garza later scored Fenn on a sac bunt RBI fielder's choice.
UC San Diego scored its first two runs in fifth inning before plating another in the sixth to make it 6-3.
Cal Poly plated another run in the ninth to extend the lead to 7-3. The Tritons scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to get within two before Sagouspe shut the door to seal the victory.
The Mustangs will finish the 2024 season at home this week against Long Beach for a three-game series Thursday through Saturday. First pitch of the series Thursday is set for 6 p.m.
