SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Coming off a series sweep against Big West foe UC Riverside, a fourth consecutive series win to start the conference slate, the Mustangs (18-12, 9-3 BW) are back for the next five contests, with Fresno State (22-9, 12-3 MW) being first in a midweek Tuesday matchup.
Last week, Cal Poly ran the gauntlet and went 4-1 through five games in six days. The Mustangs started the week hosting San Diego State for a two-game home series, taking the first one 6-3 thanks to a solid team pitching performance, but the Aztecs managed a 9-8 extra-innings victory the next day.
Kicking off the UC Riverside road series, Jakob Wright improved his record to 5-2 in a 9-3 win. That game was arguably his most complete pitching performance to date, resetting his career-high single-game strikeouts mark (11) and pitching seven complete innings to allow only three runs and six hits.
Clinching their fourth straight Big West series, the Mustangs enjoyed a home run from Ryan Fenn and a pair of doubles from Ryan Stafford in the 6-2 win that also had Steven Brooks giving up just two runs in his third quality start of the season.
Finally, Joe Yorke highlighted Cal Poly's first series sweep of 2024 after beating the Highlanders 8-3. The senior first baseman made history by breaking the program's 24-year-old career RBI record, notching his 161st and 162nd to help the Mustangs put together their best offensive outing of the week.
Before Cal State Bakersfield comes to town this weekend, Cal Poly hosts Fresno State tomorrow evening with a 5:00 p.m. start time. This is the third straight season that the Bulldogs and Mustangs will face off, with Cal Poly victorious in four of the last five games, including all three home games.
Despite a 69-120 all-time record in favor of Fresno State, the Mustangs outscored their Mountain West foe 37-14 during a trio of victories last season. Since moving to Division I in 1995, Cal Poly's record against Fresno State stands at 30-31.
The Bulldogs are currently first in their conference by a five-game margin and on an eight-game win streak against Mountain West opponents. They swept UNLV and Nevada in back-to-back weeks after starting the conference slate with a pair of series wins against San Jose State and Air Force.
As a team, Fresno State is nearly statistically identical to Cal Poly on paper. The Bulldogs are hitting at a .300 batting average, highlighted by five players over 30 hits while all batting over a .300 clip, respectively. Unsurprisingly, leading hitter Eddie Saldivar is pacing the Mountain West in hits.
The Bulldogs are also blitzing their conference from the pitching front, holding a 4.22 ERA and 29th place in the nation for that statistic. Like Cal Poly, they are also high on the leaderboards for hit by pitch (18th), K/BB ratio (4th), WHIP (13th), and BB/9 (2nd).
