Joe Yorke Breaks Career RBIs Record as Mustangs Sweep UCR Series
4/7/2024 5:13:00 PM | Baseball
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Senior first baseman Joe Yorke etched his name in Cal Poly history, racking up 4 RBIs to take the program's career record, now 162-and-counting. Thanks to his timely scoring, Yorke led Cal Poly to an 8-3 win over UCR and series sweep while retaining 2nd place in the Big West.
Griffin Naess, the true freshman starting pitcher from Laguna Beach, provided solid defensive support from the mound for Cal Poly yet again, going 5 complete innings while allowing 7 hits and 3 runs. Naess is still yet to allow more than three runs in a start.
Continuing to start games right, the Mustangs wasted no time getting on the board with Joe Yorke hitting a single down the right field line to round Ryan Fenn for a 1-0 lead.
Yorke built on his first RBI with a second one just two innings later, bringing Jake Steels in to score. That hit took Yorke's career total to 160 RBIs, officially tying Cal Poly's program record.
A string of three UC Riverside runs in as many innings, including a two-run homer in the bottom of the 5th, gave the Highlanders their first lead of the game, 3-2.
Steels came across home plate for the second time of the game after Fenn's RBI-single up the middle before Alejandro Garza tacked on another RBI with his double off the left-center wall, regaining the lead for Cal Poly at 4-3.
Dylan Kordic laid down a bunt in the top of the 8th, which resulted in a Highlander throwing error, scoring Garza all the way from first and allowing Kordic himself to take third base. The Mustangs took a two-run lead at that point. Aaron Casillas also picked up an RBI on a ground out, scoring Kordic's pinch runner Kemet Brown and doubling up UC Riverside's score, 6-3.
Yorke finally broke through again with a pair of RBIs in the 9th inning to both put the game definitively out of reach and smash the almost 25-year-old program record for career RBIs.
Jake Torres and Tanner Sagouspe both pitched well in relief of Naess, combining to allow just two hits in three scoreless innings as Sagouspe increased his team-leading saves mark to 5 on the year.
After nabbing their first series sweep of 2024, the Mustangs return to Baggett Stadium for a 5-game home stretch, which includes a pair of midweek contests bookending a conference series against Cal State Bakersfield.
