Mustangs Unload in Fifth Inning for Game 2 Win and Series Tie
4/21/2024 9:00:00 AM | Baseball
Steven Brooks (7.0 IP, 2 ER, 3 K) recorded his third straight start of at least six innings pitched and two or less runs allowed en route to improving his record to 4-5 on the year.
Despite being tied for 4th in the Big West for win percentage, Cal Poly is now tied with UC San DIego for most wins as the Mustangs sit at a 12-5 conference record.
Brooks held Hawai'i at bay until the bottom of the fourth. Two Hawai'i base runners walked on, with the lead runner advancing to third on a wild pitch, before the opposition's top hitter singled to right center, scoring one. The next Rainbow Warrior up to bat grounded into a double play but not before another runner came across for a 2-0 Hawai'i lead.
In response to UH's pair of runs, the Mustangs opened the flood gates in the fifth inning, starting with Zach Daudet's second home run in three games: a second-pitch dinger to lead off the frame. Jake Steels increased his team-leading walks total (25) in the next at-bat while Ryan Fenn and Joe Yorke both reached on fielding errors to load the bases.
Coming in clutch, Alejandro Garza took advantage of the runners in scoring position by singling to left center, bringing in both Fenn and Steels to take a 3-2 lead. The Mustangs were not done there as two batters later Dylan Kordic hit a sac fly to score Yorke on a tag-up.
Cal Poly forced the UH starter out of the game after Evan Cloyd singled up the middle for another score, finally capping off the fifth inning with a 5-2 lead as the lineup doubled over just before the final out.
With continued assistance from Brooks on the pitching side, Cal Poly was able to add on some insurance in the 8th inning. Kordic led off with a double and Cam Hoiland delivered his first triple of the season, scoring Kordic.
With Hoiland setting himself up in scoring position on the triple, he was able to cross home plate when Daudet picked up yet another RBI on a sac fly. That increased the gap to 7-2.
Brooks was relieved to start the bottom of the 8th, and Hawai'i answered in-turn. Two consecutive errors put a pair of runners on base for the Rainbow Warriors before a double to right field and single up the middle brought in a combined trio of runs. Tanner Sagouspe was then brought in to stop the bleeding.
The 9th inning yielded another run at the hands of Kordic who doubled to left field and scored Garza.
In a game continually marred by defensive errors, Cal Poly added a second run in the inning as Tate Shimao, pinch running for Kordic, made his way from second all the way home on a throwing error to first. That extended Cal Poly's lead to 9-5 with one final half inning to go.
Sagouspe picked up his 6th save of the season by shutting the door on Hawai'i with two nearly perfect innings, just allowing one walk but no hits and no runs.
After tying the series, Cal Poly and Hawai'i play the series finale Sunday at 4:00 p.m. PT.
