Cal Poly Drops First Big West Series of Season to Hawai’i

HONOLULU, O'Ahu – The Cal Poly Mustangs (22-16, 12-6 BW) fought hard into extra innings but fell to Hawai'i (22-15, 6-9 BW) after the Rainbow Warriors scored in four straight innings, losing the series finale 6-5.
After a tough pair of starting appearances to kick off April, Griffin Naess gave the Mustangs a solid outing by returning to his March form. Naess went 7 complete innings while allowing just 4 hits and 1 run before being relieved to start the 8th.
Although the Mustangs would eventually fall in the 11th, they forced Hawai'i to go through 8 different pitchers in the overtime affair. Still, the winning Rainbow Warrior pitcher allowed no earned runs in extras to come up clutch when they needed it.
Doing what he's continued to do all season, Ryan Fenn doubled to left center and set himself up in scoring position. Joe Yorke had no trouble singling up the middle to score Fenn and put the Mustangs up 1-0 after the first inning.
Naess then went on an outstanding run, holding the Rainbow Warriors to just a handful of scattered hits through the next five innings. Hawai'i finally managed to tie up the contest at 1-1, but Cal Poly cut short the RBI-double that could have pushed the inning further.
The Mustangs continued to rely on Naess in shutting down Hawai'i until they were able to break through again with Ryan Stafford knocking a 2-RBI single into center field during the 7th. Following that, Evan Cloyd hit a sac fly for another run in the top of the 8th, widening the score to 4-1.
Hawai'i wasted no time responding with a two-run bottom of the frame before finding luck and scoring on a wild pitch in the 9th to send the game to extra innings.
Up to bat first in extras, Cloyd struck first and delivered his second RBI of the day to give Cal Poly a one-run lead in the 10th. Hawai'i traded a sac fly to knot the game back up at 5-5.
The Mustangs were able to move Stafford onto second base in the 11th but were shut down at the top of the frame before Hawai'i doubled to right field for a walk-off RBI.
With no midweek game on the horizon, Cal Poly will get a deserved break before hosting UC Davis next weekend.
