Mustangs Fall to Hawai'i Walk Off in Game One

MANOA, Hawai'i – Zach Daudet built on his successful midweek performance with a 2-RBI outing Friday night against Hawai'i (21-14 5-8 BW), but the Mustangs (21-15, 11-5 BW) were unable to break a 3-3 tie before the Rainbow Warriors walked off in the 9th inning to seal a game one victory.
Hawai'i collected three hits in the bottom of the first to lead off the game with a 1-0 lead. Cal Poly's offense had a few chances early on with the middle of the lineup scattering hits until Zach Daudet finally broke through in the 4th inning.
Joe Yorke and Alejandro Garza got started with a single and double respectively to place themselves in scoring position. Tate Shimao, pinch hitting for Evan Cloyd as designated hitter, was intentionally walked to load the bases before Daudet nearly cleared the bases with a well-hit single to center field, scoring both Garza and Yorke while Shimao took third.
Later that inning, Shimao made the trek home on a wild pitch, putting the Mustangs up 3-1 and completely overturning the Hawai'i lead.
In the bottom of the inning, the Rainbow Warriors tied the game after doubling down the right field line. The Mustangs only had one final runner in scoring position through the remainder of the game despite getting solid relief pitching.
Even so, Jake Torres (2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER) was given the loss with one of his two runners in scoring position scoring from a Hawai'i sac fly off Tanner Sagouspe. With the 9th inning walk off, Hawai'i took game one and snapped Cal Poly's win streak.
A bright spot for the offense yet again, Jake Steels went 2-for-5 and extended his on-base streak to 36 games. Ryan Stafford (16 games) and Joe Yorke (13) both collected hits to increase their respective streaks once more.
Although the Rainbow Warriors were able to tie the game back up midway through, Jakob Wright still pitched a solid outing to keep Cal Poly alive. The redshirt sophomore pitched at least 5 innings while allowing less than 3 earned runs for the eighth time this season.
Looking to get back in the win column and tie the series, Cal Poly faces off against Hawai'i at the same time on Saturday, 9:35 p.m. PT at Les Murakami Stadium.
