Mustangs Host Cal State Bakersfield in Revised Friday and Sunday Series
4/11/2024 1:15:00 PM | Baseball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Cal Poly baseball program (18-13, 9-3 BW) hosts a Big West series at Baggett Stadium for the first time in almost three weeks with Cal State Bakersfield (10-22, 5-7 BW) coming to San Luis Obispo this weekend.
Due to anticipated weather in the San Luis Obispo area on Saturday, changes have been made to the series. With no game planned for Saturday, there will now be a doubleheader scheduled for Friday with the first pitch of the opening leg set for 1:00 p.m., while Sunday's game remains a 1:00 p.m. start.
Please be advised that, due to open house weekend coinciding with the Friday doubleheader, parking near the baseball stadium will be greatly impacted as overflow parking zones for the student event. Parking will be extremely limited, particularly during the second leg of the doubleheader. It is highly recommended that fans plan accordingly by either finding other places, in and around campus, to park or utilizing alternative means of transportation.
The Mustangs will look to bounce back after a tough 5-2 midweek loss against Fresno State, but they have plenty of conference success to use for emulation. Larry Lee and Co. have not lost a single Big West series to date, which includes the big upset series win over #25 UC Santa Barbara.
Continuing to be one of the team's driving forces, Jake Steels is ranked 31st in the country with a .410 batting average while Ryan Stafford's 13 doubles sit 28th in D1 baseball. Joe Yorke, fresh off setting the new Cal Poly career RBI record, is on an 8-game hit streak with five of those being multi-hit efforts.
While the offense has arguably been Cal Poly's greatest phase of the game, the pitching and overall defense have done their job recently. The Mustangs have allowed more than three runs just twice in the last eight contests as the team's 4.18 ERA places comfortably at 27th in the country.
Cal Poly leads the Roadrunners 26-12 in the all-time series, which dates back to having played every season against Cal State Bakersfield since 2011. This is somewhat of an opportunity for revenge given CSUB took last season's series 2-1 while also winning two of the last three series total.
Cal State Bakersfield has seven different consistent starters hitting over .270, but the Roadrunners' primary strength is in their starting rotation from the mound. Kellen O'Connor is second in the Big West among starting pitchers with a 2.08 ERA.
Currently 8th place in the Big West, the Roadrunners have won six of their last nine games but most recently dropped a midweek contest 11-1 in seven innings to Pacific. With two teams on conference series win streaks, this weekend is sure to be an exciting and pivotal matchup for their respective momentums going forward.
