Tough Shooting Night Plagues Mustangs Against UC Irvine

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — It was one of those nights that happen in basketball where shots just were not falling for the Cal Poly women's basketball team as the Mustangs shot 25 percent from the field and fell at home to UC Irvine Thursday, 65-31.Ania McNicholas' eight points. Senior forward Natalia Ackerman had seven points and 10 rebounds and redshirt freshman forward Sierra Lichtie also added seven points.
The Mustangs, who are now in a three-way tie for third in the Big West standings, will look to stay in the top four in the Big West standings when finishing out the regular season Saturday at home against UC San Diego at 2 p.m. for senior day.
If Cal Poly wins, they will secure a top-four seed in next week's Big West Championship and receive one of the first-round byes.
Despite having a hard time scoring in the first half, the Mustangs' (16-12, 12-7, BW) strong defense limited the Anteaters (20-8, 15-4 BW) to 26 points and trailed by just nine.
However, with eight minutes remaining in the third and UC Irvine leading 26-19, the Anteaters finished the third quarter on a 19-0 run to take a 45-19 lead and never looked back.
