Career Performances from Casillas and Fenn Lead to Series Victory

The month of 5's continued for Ryan Fenn as the redshirt junior hit a career-high 5 RBIs while also sending his first career homer out of Baggett Stadium. Aaron Casillas followed closely behind him with a massive career afternoon, tallying 4 RBIs on top of his own first career homer as a Mustang.
CSUN's lead-off hitter opened the game with a quick single, but Stafford gunned his steal attempt down at second during the next at-bat. Stafford then threw down a second straight would-be base thief after Casey Murray Jr. prevented the previous deep right single from turning into extra bases.
Ryan Stafford took the second pitch of his at-bat over the shortstop's head for Cal Poly's first hit of the game. The Matadors shut down the early opportunity with a closely-called double play.
CSUN responded with two straight singles in the top of the second for its first RISP, but Joe Yorke's quick glove stopped a direct line drive down the right side to end the frame.
Yorke and Alejandro Garza kicked off the bottom of the second with back-to-back singles. Dylan Kordic reached on a fielder's choice that left Yorke on third for corner base runners. Casey Murray Jr. hit a solid line drive into shallow center field, scoring Yorke for a 1-0 lead.
Aaron Casillas crushed a 2-RBI double parallel to the left field line that cleared the bases, bringing Kordic and Murray Jr. all the way home from first and second. There was no play home on the next hit as Casillas scored on Evan Cloyd's RBI single up the middle, giving Cal Poly a commanding 4-0 lead.
Steven Brooks pitched scoreless into the top of the fifth when CSUN's DH finally grounded out to third but not before the RBI was scored, cutting the deficit to three. Evan Cloyd led off the bottom of the frame with a well-hit ball that carried into deep left for a stand-up double.
Jake Steels continued lighting up the hits column with yet another single that put runners on the corners. Steels moved into scoring position on a wild pitch during Ryan Stafford follow-up at-bat. Stafford grounded out to the shortstop, allowing Steels to easily cross home plate for a 5-1 answer.
Ryan Fenn bunted himself on, putting Mustangs at first and third for the second time. With that, Fenn's hit streak extended to 13 games while Stafford also extended to 12 and Garza to 9. A run-and-hit right before the end of the inning gave Yorke another RBI and put the Mustangs up 6-1 into the sixth.
Steven Brooks continued to lead the Mustangs in strikeouts with a collection of K's in the first few innings as the veteran right hander responded to CSUN scoring in the previous inning by going 1-2-3 against the Matador batters in the sixth.
After Kordic picked up his first single of the game, Casillas went back to the same spot he did earlier, tallying his second double of the game while putting himself and Kordic in scoring position.
Steels and Stafford walked in order to bring in another run and load the bases as CSUN's first reliever was pulled. Fenn nearly cleared the bases as he mimicked Casillas' double while adding two RBIs to his three from the previous day, putting Cal Poly up 9-1.
As Brooks reached the seventh inning for the third time in 2024, the junior got into a jam that yielded a pair of runs on the third batter's right field single. Four straight hits given up and two more runners in scoring position caused Head Coach Larry Lee to bring in Caden Pearlman. Brooks finished the day pitching 6 ? innings with 5 K's.
CSUN's timely pinch hitter immediately sent Steels back to the warning track for a 2-RBI double that brought the score to 9-5. Pearlman got out of the jam shortly after as Cal Poly looked for an answer.
Like Casillas earlier, Cloyd also picked up his second double of the day, batting in two runs scoring Kordic and Garza before crossing home plate himself as Steels singled in the next at-bat. Cloyd's 3 RBIs in the game matched his previous career high mark.
Fenn absolutely crushed a ball to deep left center that left the park for his first career Cal Poly home run, bringing his RBI total to 5 for the day and 8 for the series. A massive 6-run inning brought Cal Poly right back to a double-digit lead at 15-5.
Aaron Casillas added his own 2-RBI homer in the bottom of the eighth, giving Cal Poly its first two-home run of the season as Casillas also notched his new career-high for RBIs with 4 on the day.
Caden Pearlman, Ryan Baum, and Ethan Marmie combined for just 2 hits and zero runs through the final two frames as Brooks was awarded his second straight victory, taking his record to 2-3.
Joe Yorke also moved to 144 career RBIs, which is fourth in program history. He currently sits just 17 away from breaking the program record, which is currently held by Steve Wood at 160 RBIs (1998-2000).
