SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — As Big West play lurks on the horizon, Cal Poly baseball continues the home stretch yet again with a Wednesday match-up against the visiting UNLV Rebels (9-6). The Mustangs (7-8) have five wins in their last six games and are looking to reach an even record prior to hosting CSUN for the conference-opening series this weekend.
Cal Poly enjoyed a record-setting weekend, notching not only its most runs in a single-inning against a Division I opponent (14 runs in a 19-2 victory) but also grabbing its first series win against a Big-10 opponent in the program's Division I era. A massive part of the 3-1 record against Ohio State was the Mustangs' dominance from the mound with a 2.50 team ERA through the weekend.
Seven of the eleven deployed pitchers allowed zero runs in appearance, including Griffin Naess who pitched 5 scoreless innings in the fourth and final series-clinching game against the Buckeyes. After another fantastic series for the pitching corps, Cal Poly has moved up to 28th in the NCAA Division I and 2nd in the Big West with a 3.82 team ERA this season.
Continuing to impress as well were the Mustang batters that extended their hitting streaks, which included Ryan Fenn (10 games), Ryan Stafford (9 games), and Alejandro Garza (6 games). Garza led all Cal Poly batters with his .500 batting average, 8 hits, and 5 RBIs through the series.
Stafford, who has remained hot since turning his season around in the Utah series, hit Cal Poly's first home run of the season and now sits second on the team in hits with 19 while also third with 7 RBIs.
Jake Steels is also still tearing apart pitch offerings, as the senior outfielder is hitting at a .411 clip. Steels is fourth in the Big West for batting average while tied for second with 23 hits, which is also good enough for top-100 in Division I.
Originally slated to play two days in a row between UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly, UNLV's Tuesday night game was canceled due to a medical emergency at the Gauchos' venue. The Rebels now come to Baggett Stadium for a one-off non-conference clash.
The Mustangs and Rebels last played an offensive slug fest of a series in 2022 where UNLV came out 2-1 through the three games, scoring 33 total runs in the process. Despite that anomaly, Cal Poly won the previous two series since 2007 and holds the all-time bragging rights, leading 7-2.
UNLV has lost its last five straight, including dropping a stunning 31-15 battle against New Mexico last weekend. Despite clear pitching troubles with a 5.77 team ERA, the UNLV bats have been dangerous this season as all but three Rebels hold at least a .275 batting average, which includes nine that are hitting above a .300 clip.
