FEDERAL WAY, Wash. — Sophomores Drew Huston and Alex Seybold both shattered school records during the men's Pac-12 Last Chance Invite held at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center on Sunday.
With hopes of posting a time that would be quick enough to qualify for the NCAA Men's Swimming Championships, Huston swam a personal best of 1:41.32 in the men's 200-yard backstroke — breaking his own program record in the event by nearly a full second. The time is the 49th-fastest swam in the NCAA this season. The NCAA A Cut standard in the event is 1:39.13.
Seybold recorded an over three second personal best in the men's 200-yard breaststroke of 1:56.89, obliterating the 2014 school record by a second and a half (1:58.41). The Danville, Calif. native also met the NCAA B cut in the process.
Later in the day Sunday, Huston hit the long course pool and posted a U.S. Olympic Trials qualifying time in the 200-meter backstroke of 2:00.79. The Fox Island, Wash. native already punched his ticket to the Olympic Trials this past August at the 2023 Speedo Junior National Championships when he met the standard in the 100-meter back, but now Huston will get to swim in a pair of events at the meet. The 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials will be held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on June 15-23.
Huston has had an absolutely remarkable 2023-24 season, breaking school records in the 100 and 200 back, becoming Cal Poly's first MPSF champion in the 200 back and swimming the lead-off leg on Cal Poly's school-record breaking 400 medley relay at the conference championships. He also recorded the fourth-fastest 200 IM time in program history and the fifth-fastest 100 free.
