SCORESHEET
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Redshirt sophomore Jarad Priest (pictured above) secured a decisive victory at 197 pounds and several Mustangs fought valiantly against some highly-ranked opponents, but Cal Poly fell to Arizona State 34-4 on Friday night in its home finale.
Prior to the Pac-12 dual with the Sun Devils, Cal Poly (5-4, 1-3 Pac-12) honored three seniors — Michael Goldfeder, Legend Lamer and Daniel Vizcarra. All three got the chance to take the mat against an extremely talented Arizona State (5-5, 3-1) side, who is No. 12 in the latest InterMat tournament rankings and had seven ranked wrestlers in the lineup Friday.
Priest captured the lone victory for the Mustangs, rolling to a 11-3 major decision over Arizona State's Jacob Meissner thanks to a pair of takedowns. Priest improved to 6-3 in duals on the season.
Several Mustangs nearly pulled off upset victories over top-5 nationally ranked opponents, most notably the Lamer brothers. At 149 pounds, redshirt sophomore Chance Lamer, ranked No. 5 in the country, faced off with No. 3 Kyle Parco. It was a thriller, but ultimately a first period takedown ended up being the difference for Parco, who won by a tightly-contested 4-3 decision. The defeat to the three-time All-American was Chance's first in a dual this season, giving him a 14-2 overall record and 8-1 mark in duals.
Right after, No. 31 Legend Lamer stepped on the mat at 157 pounds to battle three-time All-American and three-time Pac-12 champion Jacori Temmer, ranked No. 3 in the nation. Legend took it to Temmer early, securing a first period takedown. He carried a 5-3 advantage into the third, but a pair of takedowns allowed Teemer to escape with a 10-7 decision despite an incredible effort by Legend.
At 184 pounds, Kendall La Rosa squared off with No. 26 Tony Negron and nearly came away with a win. Trailing 4-1, La Rosa earned a reversal early in the final period to pull within a point, but an escape and a riding time point allowed Negron to grab a 6-3 decision.
Redshirt freshman Koda Holeman (133 pounds) and Vizcarra (174) both made their first appearance in the Mustangs' lineup this season, while redshirt sophomore Cole Jackson (285) wrestled in his second career dual. Cal Poly was without three ranked wrestlers for the dual.
The Mustangs, No. 25 in the NWCA Coaches Poll, finish off their Pac-12 slate at 11 a.m. Sunday at No. 16 Stanford.
