SCORESHEET
STANFORD, Calif. — The Cal Poly wrestling program wrapped up Pac-12 dual action Sunday, falling 30-9 to Stanford inside Maples Pavilion.
The Cardinal, ranked No. 16 in the latest NWCA Coaches Poll, won eight matches with six ranked wrestlers taking the mat. No. 25 Cal Poly (5-5, 1-4 Pac-12) was without two of its six nationally ranked wrestlers against Stanford (10-2, 3-0 Pac-12) and emerged victorious in a pair of bouts.
Trevor Tinker, the 23rd-ranked heavyweight in the country, got into an absolute war with Stanford's Peter Ming at 285 pounds. Trailing 7-5 entering the third period, Tinker was in desperate need of a takedown — and he got one with about 45 seconds remaining. With the score knotted at 8-8, the bout went into overtime and just seven seconds into it, Tinker secured a clutch takedown to capture a 11-8 decision. With the victory, Tinker improved to 8-3 on the season and 5-1 in duals.
The Mustangs' other victory on the day came at 174 pounds as freshman Blake Hinrichsen accepted a forfeit. He improved to 9-5 overall and 2-0 in duals.
A couple Mustangs fought valiantly despite coming up short in their matches. In his first career dual, redshirt freshman Ty Chandler came out and took it to Stanford's Dom LaJoie early, grabbing a first period takedown. But LaJoie was able to pull away in the final two periods to earn a 9-4 decision.
For the second straight dual, redshirt sophomore Chance Lamer got into a dogfight with a nationally ranked opponent at 149 pounds. Two escapes and a penalty point weren't enough as Chance, No. 5 in the country, lost a nail-biter to No. 11 Jaden Abas by a 4-3 decision.
Cal Poly travels to Cal Baptist at 6 p.m. Friday to wrap up its dual season.
