Cal Poly Falls Short at No. 20 Little Rock

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Graduate student Adam Kemp and redshirt sophomore Chance Lamer both remained undefeated in duals this season, but Cal Poly wrestling suffered a 21-12 defeat at No. 20 Little Rock on Saturday.
The 23rd-ranked Mustangs (5-3, 1-2 Pac-12) won three bouts in the dual.
Redshirt freshman Dom Mendez, ranked 30th in the country at 125 pounds, helped the team jump out to an early 3-0 lead thanks to a 10-5 decision over Little Rock's Jeremiah Reno.
Chance gave Cal Poly a 9-6 advantage with a victory by injury default at 149 pounds. Chance, ranked No. 5 in the nation in his weight class, was winning his match 14-8 in the third period before his opponent was forced to retire due to injury. He improved to 14-1 overall and 8-0 in duals this season with the win.
In his first action on the mat since placing eighth at the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships on Dec. 30, Kemp, No. 10 in the country, defeated No. 24 Tyler Brennan by a 3-2 decision at 174 pounds to even the dual at 12-12 with three matches remaining. Kemp earned a takedown in the third period to secure the win and move to 12-3 on the season and 3-0 in duals.
Little Rock (12-5, 3-1 Pac-12) won the last three bouts to take the dual victory.
Zeth Romney (133 pounds), Abe Hinrichsen (141), Legend Lamer (157), Michael Goldfeder (165) and Jarad Priest (197) all fell to opponents ranked higher than them. Romney's defeat ended a seven-match winning streak and Legend came up just short in a battle at 157 pounds, falling via sudden victory in the first overtime period.
The Mustangs also sent six wrestlers to the Oaks Open hosted by Menlo College on Saturday in Atherton, Calif. Competing unattached, redshirt junior Daniel Vizcarra won the 174-pound title with a 3-0 record, and Koda Holeman (125), Ty Chandler (133), Devin Alexander (165) and Tyler Hodges (197) all placed second in their respective weight classes.
Cal Poly hosts No. 24 Arizona State at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 9, at Mott Athletics Center in its home finale.
