ST. GEORGE, Utah — Senior Sean Keegan shattered a 13-year-old school record in the men's 200-yard individual medley during the second day of the MPSF Swimming Championships on Thursday at Utah Tech's Human Performance Center.
In the team standings of the swimming portion of the conference meet, the men currently sit in fourth place out of seven teams (206 points), while the women are in seventh out of 10 teams (110 points).
"There were some pretty big drops across the board in prelims [Thursday]," interim head coach Tom Milich said. "Overall, we're swimming well."
After nearly breaking the men's 200 IM school record in prelims, Keegan stepped up and did it in the finals Thursday night. The Hermosa Beach, Calif. native posted a time of 1:46.79 to place fourth in the event, surpassing Peter Kline's 2011 school record of 1:46.89. Keegan had the third-fastest time in prelims (1:46.92) and was just .03 seconds off the school record. The record-breaking performance came just a day after Keegan recorded the second-fastest 200 freestyle time in program history (1:36.26) while swimming the lead-off leg on Cal Poly's 800 free relay.
Keegan, Drew Huston, Jonathan Butler and Evan O'Connell nearly rewrote the history books in the men's 200 free relay. The quartet posted a time of 1:20.42, just .07 seconds off the 2019 school record. Cal Poly placed sixth in the event.
Individually, Huston also took 12th in the men's 200 IM. During prelims, the stellar sophomore climbed to No. 4 all-time in the event with a time of 1:48.55. Sophomore Alex Seybold secured 14th in the 200 IM.
Senior Joshua Billotte had a strong showing in the men's 500 free, grabbing seventh. Sophomores Nick Elliott, Lucas Meneghetti, Cameron Schwantes all qualified for the B-final in the event, placing 14th, 15th and 16th respectively.
On the women's side, freshman Olivia Sundgren just missed out on securing a spot in the A-final in the 500 free, placing 11th overall (4:58.55). Fellow freshman Rhian Neitzel recorded a lifetime best in the 200 IM (2:04.91) to capture 12th.
Prelims on day three of the MPSF Swimming Championships start at 9 a.m. PST Friday, with finals to follow at 5 p.m. PST.
