
Mustang Men Shred Record Books on Day 3 of Conference

ST. GEORGE, Utah — Sophomore Drew Huston obliterated his own school record in the men's 100-yard backstroke, Cal Poly shattered the program record in the men's 400 medley relay and three other top-5 marks were swam during the third day of the MPSF Swimming Championships on Friday at Utah Tech's Human Performance Center.
Huston had quite the day in the pool. The Fox Island, Wash. native continued his impressive season by capturing second in the 100 back with a time of 47.02 seconds. Huston posted the fastest time in prelims (46.56), breaking his own school record in the event by over half a second. He smashed the program record in the event for the first time at the Utah Tech Trailblazer Invitational in November — the site of this year's conference meet.
Huston also swam the lead-off leg on Cal Poly's 400 medley relay, which obliterated the school record by over a second and a half with a time of 3:13.92. Freshman Luke Reyes, and sophomores Finn Schlamp and Jonathan Butler swam the other three legs on the relay.
Individually, Schlamp and Reyes both recorded top-five marks Friday. While swimming in the B-final, Schlamp posted a personal best of 48.34 in the 100 butterfly — No. 4 in school history. He finished 13th in the event. During prelims of the men's 100 breaststroke, Reyes swam the fifth-fastest time (54.67 seconds) in program history. He went on to take eighth in the event, while sophomore Alex Power finished 13th.
Senior Sean Keegan continued his incredible showing at the conference meet by recording his third top-five mark in the past two days. Keegan posted the third-fastest time in school history (3:51.63) in the men's 400 individual medley during the final, grabbing fifth in the event. Keegan swam the fastest time in prelims. In the 400 IM, senior Ryan Trichler also took sixth, sophomore Alex Seybold was eighth and senior Joshua Billotte was 14th.
Freshman Scott Iannaccone placed 10th in the 100 back, and in the 200 free sophomores Lucas Meneghetti and Nick Elliott captured 12th and 14th respectively.
The Cal Poly men remain in fourth place as a team (329 points) in the swim portion of the conference meet.
Senior Kelly McDermott and freshman Rhian Neitzel had standout performances for the Mustang women Friday. McDermott secured fourth in the 400 IM with a time of 4:22.89, while Neitzel earned sixth — swimming a personal best of 4:26.48 in prelims.
Freshman Ella Bettencourt snagged 11th in the 200 free (1:51.45) and 14th in the 100 back (56.80). Freshman Melia Costa, who is No. 4 all-time in the 100 breast, placed 12th in the event, and freshman Olivia Sundgren and sophomore Katie Treacy took 13th and 14th respectively in the 400 IM.
The Mustangs are currently sitting in sixth place out of 10 teams (178 points) on the women's side.
Prelims on the final day of the MPSF Swimming Championships start at 9 a.m. PST Saturday, with finals to follow at 5 p.m. PST.
