12/28/2024 4:46:00 PM | Women's Basketball
CEDAR CITY, Utah — Cal Poly women's basketball finished out its final non-conference game of the season strong Saturday as three Mustangs finished in double figures to lead Cal Poly to a 66-58 win over Southern Utah in its final game of 2024.
Senior guard Annika Shah led the way with a game high 25 points, marking her second straight game scoring 25 or more. Sophomore forward Mary Carter notched her second double-double of the season, scoring 16 points and grabbing a career high 11 rebounds. Carter also had a career high four blocks on the afternoon. Senior guard Sidney Richards added 13 points, her third double digit scoring game of the season as she played a career high 39 minutes.
Shah and Carter combined to make eight threes, accounting for all of the Mustangs' (6-6, 1-1 Big West) triples on the day. Cal Poly has now made at least eight shots from beyond the arc in three of its last four games.
For the second straight game, the Mustangs got out to a big first quarter lead as Cal Poly scored the first 17 points of the game, holding the Thunderbirds (3-10) without a point the first five minutes. The Mustangs shot 56 percent from the field and knocked down five threes in the opening quarter as they took a 27-8 lead heading into the second.
Southern Utah went on an 11-4 run over the first eight minutes of the second quarter to make it 31-19. Cal Poly finished the half strong to take a 36-22 lead at the break.
The Mustangs opened the second half making five of their first seven shots to stretch their lead up to 21, 48-27 midway through the third. The Thunderbirds were then able to cut the lead down to 14 by the end of the third.
Southern Utah got back within 11 midway through the fourth. They later got within six with 90 seconds left in the game following a 10-1 run. However, Cal Poly's defense locked down as the Mustangs held the Thunderbirds to just one point the rest of the way to seal the win.
Cal Poly finishes non-conference play with five wins, the program's most in the preseason since the 2017-18 season.
The Mustangs now switch their focus to the remaining 18 Big West games, the first of which begins Thursday, Jan. 2 on the road against last year's Big West champion UC Irvine. They then return home next Saturday, Jan. 4 to host the 2022 and 2023 Big West champion Hawai'i.
