Mustangs Fall on the Road at UC Irvine Thursday
1/2/2025 8:32:00 PM | Women's Basketball
IRVINE, Calif. — Senior guard Annika Shah recorded her third straight game scoring in double figures, but Cal Poly's offense struggled to put the ball in the basket as the Mustangs fell on the road Thursday to UC Irvine, 60-38.
Shah finished with a team high 12 points and four assists. She has now scored in double figures in 11 of 13 games. Sophomore forward Mary Carter finished one point shy of another double-double as she recorded a career-high 12 rebounds while scoring nine points.
The Mustangs (6-7, 1-2 Big West) struggled shooting from the floor, shooting 25 percent from the field and 29 percent from three. The Anteaters (8-4, 2-0 Big West), last year's Big West champion, shot 39 percent from the field.
The game was close early, tied 8-8 with less than five minutes left in the opening quarter. However, UC Irvine finished the quarter on a 12-2 run to take a 20-10 advantage, a lead they held on to the rest of the game.
The Anteaters continued to stretch their lead in the second quarter, taking a 40-16 lead into halftime. The Mustangs were unable to gain any ground in the second half as UC Irvine led by as much as 28.
Cal Poly will look to bounce back Saturday at home when the Mustangs host Hawai'i at 1 p.m. inside Mott Athletics Center. The game will air live on ESPN+ and Spectrum TV.
