Shah Sets Career High to Lead Mustangs Past Seattle
12/20/2024 5:17:00 PM | Women's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — It was a tale of two halves offensively for Cal Poly women's basketball Friday afternoon inside Mott Athletics Center, especially for senior guard Annika Shah. Shah caught fire in the third quarter, scoring 20 points on six made threes to help Cal Poly roll past Seattle University 67-42.
Shah finished with a career high 26 points, going 10-19 from the field and 6-13 from three. Her six threes matched the most she's made in a game in her career. As a team, the Mustangs (5-6, 1-1 Big West) were 1-11 from three in the first half before knocking going 8-16 in the second half.
Three other Mustangs scored at least eight points as senior guard Sidney Richards and freshman forward Nora Perez each finished with nine points. Senior guard Sydney Bourland added eight points and eight rebounds for Cal Poly, who forced the RedHawks (2-10) into 20 turnovers which the Mustangs converted into 21 points. They also limited Seattle to 30 percent shooting for the game.
Cal Poly scored the first nine points of the game and didn't allow Seattle to score its first points of the game until five minutes left to go in the first quarter. Those would be the only points the RedHawks scored in the opening quarter as the Mustangs finished the quarter on a 7-0 run to lead it 16-2 after the first.
In the second quarter, Seattle went on a 7-0 run to get back within nine. Cal Poly didn't let them draw any closer as the Mustangs took a 29-18 lead into halftime.
Cal Poly began the second half with an 11-4 run, nine of which came from Shah's threes, which pushed the Mustang lead up to 18, 40-22. Shah's hot shooting became contagious as the Mustangs made eight of its first 11 threes in the second half. That allowed Cal Poly to go ahead by as much as 31 and pull away for good.
Cal Poly will play one more game in the 2024 calendar year as the Mustangs will go on the road for one final non-conference game on Dec. 28 to face Southern Utah. Tip-off in Cedar City is set for 1 p.m. PT with the game airing on ESPN+.
