Mustangs Roll Past UC Merced in Season Opener

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Four Mustangs scored in double figures as Cal Poly women's basketball cruised to a 72-40 victory over UC Merced in the season opener Wednesday evening in Mott Athletics Center.
Senior guard Annika Shah led the Mustangs with 14 points, shooting 4-9 from three. Sophomore forward Mary Carter finished with 13 points and four rebounds. Redshirt sophomore Sierra Lichtie had a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds while freshman forward Gillian Bears added 10 points as well.
Cal Poly's defense was strong from start to finish as the Mustangs held the Bobcats to 25 percent shooting from the field for the game, just five points in the entire third quarter, and forced them into 22 turnovers.
The Mustangs started the game out strong, making six of their first nine shots as they got out to a 13-2 lead four minutes into the opening quarter. They continued to push up their lead as they took a 26-11 advantage into the second quarter and led 44-24 at halftime.
Cal Poly opened the second half with a 9-2 run over the first five minutes to stretch their lead to 27 and continued to extend that the remainder of the game.
Starting off the regular season 1-0, the Mustangs will now go on the road for three straight games. They will head down to Los Angeles Saturday to face No. 3 ranked USC. Tip time is set for 2 p.m. with the game airing on Big Ten Plus.
