SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Hosting its first outdoor dual since 2019, the Cal Poly wrestling team battled hard, but fell short to No. 14 Stanford 33-12 on Saturday while competing in front of well over 1,500 fans on a mat on the grass at O’Neill Green.
The Mustangs (0-2) tried to build off the raucous environment provided by the outdoor dual, which was held during the Mustang Corral BBQ prior to the final Cal Poly home football game of the season. Unfortunately, the Cardinal (4-1) had different plans and won seven of the 10 matches en route to victory.
Cal Poly took an early 6-0 lead thanks to a forfeit by Stanford at 125 pounds. Then at 133 pounds, redshirt sophomore Zeth Romney, ranked No. 13 in the country, went toe-to-toe with No. 12 Tyler Knox in a tightly-contested match. In a low-scoring affair, Romney earned a reversal in the final period, but it wasn’t enough as he fell 5-3.
Stanford grabbed a pin at 141 pounds to take a 9-6 lead, but redshirt junior Chance Lamer stepped on the mat at 149 and helped level the dual at 9-9. The eighth-ranked 149-pounder in the nation captured a 5-1 decision over No. 10 Jaden Abas to improve to 5-0 on the season.
The Cardinal retook the lead with a major decision at 157 pounds, and then Luka Wick, the 21st-ranked 165-pounder in the country, took center stage looking to keep the Mustangs in it. He did just that, grabbing a decisive 10-4 decision over Stanford’s Zach Hanson to make it 13-12 in favor of the Cardinal and move to 3-2 on the year.
Then Stanford won four straight matches to pull away from the Mustangs. Redshirt freshman Daschle Lamer lost a tight battle at 184 pounds by a 9-7 decision, and redshirt junior Trevor Tinker was leading 15-3 when he was pinned 18 seconds into the final period of his heavyweight bout.
Cal Poly will travel to Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday, Nov. 24, to compete in the Roadrunner Open.
