
Cal Poly Takes First at Roadrunner Open; 3 Mustangs Claim Individual Titles

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Redshirt junior Jarad Priest, redshirt sophomore Cash Stewart and redshirt freshman Daschle Lamer all took first in their respective weight classes as Cal Poly wrestling captured the team title at the Roadrunner Open hosted by Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday.
Of the 26 Mustangs that wrestled in the tournament, 13 placed allowing Cal Poly to roll to the team title with 92 team points — 28 in front of second-place Oklahoma (64 points). Roughly 20 teams competed in the tournament.
For the second straight year, Lamer secured a title at the tournament, winning the 184-pound crown with a 3-0 record. He secured a pin and a technical fall to earn his spot in the first-place match, where he defeated Stanford’s Cole Han-Lindemyer by a 14-11 decision. Lamer improved to 5-4 on the season with the showing. Last year, the youngest member of the Lamer family to come through Cal Poly won the 174-pound title at the tournament.
At 165 pounds, Stewart posted an undefeated 4-0 mark en route to a first-place finish. The Arlington, Wisconsin native won three bouts by decision and his opening bout of the day by fall. He defeated Cal State Bakersfield’s Guillermo Escobedo by a 6-1 decision in the championship match to move to 5-2 on the year.
Priest also captured a title with a 3-0 record at 197 pounds. He grabbed a technical fall in the quarterfinals, a 4-1 sudden victory over Cal Baptist’s Eli Sheeren in the semis and a 7-5 decision over Peter Ming in the first-place bout. The Bakersfield native improved his record to 4-5 on the season.

Redshirt junior Trevor Tinker (285 pounds), redshirt sophomore Koda Holeman (125 pounds) and redshirt freshman Blake Hinrichsen (174 pounds) all secured second-place finishes in their respective weight classes with 3-1 records. Tinker, ranked 25th in the country at heavyweight, come up short to No. 33 Jake Andrews from CSUB in his first-place match by an 8-1 decision.
Redshirt junior Josh Harkey placed third at 197 pounds with a 4-1 record, winning four consecutive matches after losing his opening bout. Redshirt freshman Devin Alexander (157 pounds) and freshman Alek VanBebber (141) each finished fourth, while redshirt junior Abe Hinrichsen (157) and freshman Jake Honey (174) grabbed fifth-place finishes. Redshirt freshman Tyler Hodges (197) and freshman Anthony Berg (157) each earned sixth in their weight class.
Cal Poly will enjoy a little breather before traveling to Las Vegas on Dec. 6-7 to wrestle in the 42nd annual Cliff Keen Invitational held inside the Las Vegas Convention Center.
