SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — To cap off its annual Alumni and Supporter weekend, the Cal Poly wrestling program will host an outdoor dual against No. 14 Stanford on O’Neill Green at 11:30 a.m. Saturday prior to the final Cal Poly home football game of the season.
Admission to the special outdoor dual includes access to the Mustang Corral Pregame BBQ, which is served prior to all home football games. Fans are encouraged to attend the Cal Poly football game against Sacramento State at 2 p.m. after watching the Mustangs (0-1) and Cardinal (3-1) square off on the mat.
For those unable to attend the dual, a livestream will be available for free on the Cal Poly wrestling X/Twitter (@CalPolyWrestle).
Saturday’s outdoor event will mark the first time Cal Poly has wrestled outdoors since hosting a handful of extra countable matches against San Francisco State on O’Neill Green on Nov. 20, 2021. Two years prior to that, the Mustangs hosted a dual against SF State at the exact same spot, defeating them 29-15 on Nov. 16, 2019.
The Mustangs, who are receiving votes in the NWCA poll, are fresh off a strong showing at their first major tournament of the season. Cal Poly placed third out of six teams at the Tiger Style Invite hosted by No. 9 Missouri in Kansas City, finishing in front of fourth place No. 21 Little Rock and behind the host Tigers and Purdue.
Five of the 14 Mustangs that wrestled in the tournament earned podium finishes, highlighted by redshirt junior Chance Lamer and redshirt sophomore Zeth Romney capturing titles in their respective weight classes. Romney dominated the 133-pound weight class to secure a first-place finish and earn Pac-12 Wrestler of the Week honors. With a 3-0 record at the tourney, the Simi Valley, Calif. native defeated No. 29 Kade Moore from Missouri in the semifinals and then grabbed a 10-3 decision over No. 12 Braxton Brown from Maryland to take the championship at 133. Romney now has 10 career victories over ranked opponents and is 30-11 overall in his career.
Chance took care of business as the No. 1 seeded wrestler in the tournament at 149 pounds, defeating No. 15 Logan Gioffre from Missouri in the championship match to secure the title in his weight class at the Tiger Style for the second straight year.
Both Romney and Chance are still undefeated on the season (4-0).
