MISSOULA, Mont. — Led by four players scoring in double figures and hot shooting from three, Cal Poly women's basketball picked up a big road win Thursday night in Missoula, knocking off the University of Montana, 65-55.
Senior guard Annika Shah, sophomore forwards Mary Carter and Sierra Lichtie, and senior guard Sidney Richards each recorded season highs in scoring to lead the Mustangs (2-2) past the Grizzlies (1-2). They carried the load as they were the only four Cal Poly players to score in the game.
Shah led the way with a team-high 21 points, going 4-7 from three. She got out to a hot start, scoring 11 of her points in the first five minutes. Carter finished with 16 points and seven rebounds as she knocked down three triples. As a team, the Mustangs shot 47 percent from three, making nine on the night.
Lichtie came just shy of recording her second double-double of the season, finishing with 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Richards came in off the bench to also add 14 points to go along with seven rebounds.
Cal Poly made five of its first six shots from three to begin the game, getting out to a 19-6 lead. They led after the first quarter 22-9. As a team, the Mustangs were 7-11 from beyond the arc in the first and took a 39-25 advantage into halftime.
Cal Poly's defense also played a big part in the win as they held Montana to 36 percent shooting from the field and forced 18 turnovers.
The Mustangs ballooned their lead to as much as 20 with seven minutes to go in the fourth. The Grizzlies got back within striking distance after going on a 9-0 run midway through the fourth to cut the lead down to nine. However, the Mustangs never allowed them any closer.
Finishing their three game road trip on a win, the Mustangs now return home for two consecutive games inside Mott Athletics Center next week. Cal Poly hosts NAIA foe Life Pacific Tuesday at 6 p.m. followed by a showdown on Saturday against another Big Sky school in Idaho at 2 p.m.
