Three in Double Figures but Cal Poly Falls at Montana State Tuesday
11/12/2024 1:56:00 PM | Women's Basketball
BOZEMAN, Mont. — Three Mustangs scored in double figures, but turnovers plagued Cal Poly women's basketball as the Mustangs fell on the road Tuesday morning to Montana State, 75-57.
Senior guard Annika Shah and sophomore forward Mary Carter each finished with 13 points to lead the Mustangs (1-2) in scoring. Senior guard Sydney Bourland added 11 points and seven rebounds.
Cal Poly's 26 turnovers in the game, 11 of which came in the first quarter, resulted in the Bobcats (3-0) turning that into 25 points. The Mustangs did shoot a season-high 21 free throws but lost the battle of field goal percentage with Montana State shooting 45 percent compared to 39 percent for Cal Poly.
Despite the 11 first quarter turnovers, the Mustangs still found themselves only down by six heading into the second quarter. However, a 7-0 run by Montana State to start the second quarter pushed their lead up to 13. They continued to extend their lead through the quarter and led 39-20 at halftime.
Down 19 with seven minutes left in the fourth, Shah made back-to-back threes in a minute span that got them back within 13. However, the Bobcats responded with a 7-0 run to push Cal Poly's deficit back up to 20.
The Mustangs will wrap up their three game road trip Thursday when they head to Missoula to face the University of Montana at 7 p.m. PT on ESPN+.
